After a polarizing set at Coachella, Frank Ocean has pulled out of the second weekend, with a source saying Blink-182 will replace him.
Last weekend, Coachella kicked off its festivities in style with massive performances from artists on the lineup – yet many were patiently waiting to see Frank Ocean finally take the stage years after being announced to play at the festival. But when it was time to take the stage, fans were met with a lengthy, hour-long delay before he finally performed a set that caused an uproar online. Rumors swirled surrounding last-minute changes to the performance hours before the show, which had apparently included an ice rink, and fans took to social media to express their frustration with the situation.
Those rumors swelled into questions regarding Frank Ocean’s status as the festival headliner for the second weekend and if Goldenvoice would book someone else to replace him if he was to drop out. Today, just hours before many begin to line up to enter the campgrounds, Variety reports that he has officially dropped from the lineup with their sources saying that Blink-182, a surprise addition to the lineup last weekend, will be replacing him.
According to a statement from Frank Ocean’s rep that was obtained by Variety, the changes to Frank Ocean’s performance weren’t made due to him “changing his mind” as many of the rumors stated. According to them, it stemmed from an injury. “After suffering an injury to his leg on festival grounds in the week leading up to weekend 1. Frank Ocean was unable to perform the intended show but was still intent on performing, and in 72 hours, the show was reworked out of necessity,” the rep stated. “On doctor’s advice, ARTIST is not able to perform weekend 2 due to two fractures and a sprain in his left leg.”
It was chaotic. There is some beauty in chaos. It isn’t what I intended to show but I did enjoy being out there and I’ll see you soon.
