Cape Town’s Bad Disk continues his rise through the ranks of the scene and he just spun up a mix that’s filled with fantastic tunes.
Electro house is gaining more ground with each passing year as artists like No Mana help lead the charge. In 2021, he curated Electromag, which featured a plethora of vibrant soundscapes for fans of the genre to bask in, and one of the standout tracks arrived in the form “Over & Over & Over Again” from the mind of Bad Disk. This South African DJ producer not only had one smasher on the compilation but a second, “Electro Forever” with EDDIE, and he’s only continued to drop some heat including the No Spaces EP and a recent remix of Mini K’s “Zion.”
Looking to gain some added insight into the scene in Cape Town, Bad Disk shared that it “changed a lot” since he first got involved with his local community. “Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of big clubs in Cape Town. There are however lots of small venues that offer techno, house, melodic techno, and deep house,” he said. “There’s also a very small collective of drum and bass heads in Cape Town and a big following in Johannesburg/Pretoria North of the country.” As for other genres like dubstep, they’re “unfortunately non-existent,” although a decade ago when the genre was peaking in popularity a handful of clubs featured it.
Beyond the club nights, Bad Disk mentioned that there are quite a few outdoor festivals that feature genres including house, techno, and progressive. “In my honest opinion, a lot of promoters I think are scared to try new things or genres,” he said. “One thing I will say though is that the psytrance scene has a cult following that never seems to diminish and the community around that continues to grow. Despite all that, the scenery here is great and the people are super welcoming.”
Now, as the summer months hit the Northern Hemisphere and Bad Disk begins to experience the winter months down in Cape Town, he’s gifted us a mix for everyone to feast on. Speaking about the mix, he said “I wanted to expand on all sounds and spheres I venture into when producing music. The track’s I’ve selected range from electro-house, progressive, and even as far as techno. I hope you enjoy this sonic venture as much as I did recording it.”
