Conceived by producer Irit Ten Hengel, God Is a DJ looks to tell a tale “about meeting across the divide of classical music and dance club culture.”
Dance culture has found its way into cinema, television, and even ballet, and sometime in the near future, its influence will extend into theatre. That’s because a new play called God Is a DJ is in the works, but little information outside of the team behind it is currently available.
According to its official website, God Is a DJ tells “an intimate story about meeting across the divide of classical music and dance club culture.” The play was first conceived by producer Irit Ten Hengel, who recently worked on the upcoming play Obsessed, and it was written by Olivier Award winners Vicky Featherstone and Jessica Swale along with BAFTA winner Matthew Brind.
God Is a DJ will start as a play but conclude with an interactive DJ set in which the audience is invited to get up and dance, per the website. It will also feature a live band and promises “some of the greatest iconic dance anthems.”
One song featured shares its title with the play. “God Is a DJ” was written by David Arnold, a Grammy and Emmy-winning composer, with help from British songwriter Karen Poole and UK up-and-comer Sam Harper.
“God Is a DJ is a tale about the endurance of love and human connection, the ecstasy and pain of superstardom and the power of music to heal across the dance floor,” according to the website. Beyond that, no further details of its plot have been shared with the public at the time of writing.
