The Widdler drops off 16 new tracks on his latest dark, atmospheric album, Gathering, which coincides with his Midnight Mass tour that kicks off in late February.
There’s no doubt that those who have a keen ear for bass music will have fallen in love with The Widdler‘s dark soundscapes over the years. A champion within the underground dubstep community, he’s continued to deliver impressive live shows and releases that have taken listeners’ breath away time and time again. In 2024, The Widdler dropped off Zero G, a massive 43-track debut album that only further proved his production prowess. Now, he’s returned with another stunner dubbed Gathering.
Clocking in at a hearty 16 tracks, the self-released Gathering is a dubstep-laden journey that unfolds with each passing second. You can tell from the jump that this isn’t a run-of-the-mill release in the bass scene, either, as deep, dark, and moody atmospheres dominate the album’s runtime.
From the repeated vocals in the title track and the eerie nature of “Dayaka” to the trippy “Abraxas” and the chilled-out “Watching Over,” these tunes feature a range of elements that enchant the mind. Standouts throughout Gathering include “True Power,” “Pentacle,” “Blood for Blood,” “Carcosa,” and “Old World,” all of which showcase The Widdler’s darker 140 style that’s fit for a horror movie. Yet each soundscape brings a sense of heaviness that takes over your soul, while the unsettling vocals that creep in from the depths of the underworld make you look over your shoulder as you give them a spin.
Gathering plays perfectly into the next step for The Widdler, his forthcoming Midnight Mass tour. Slated to kick off on February 27, this run of live performances will place everyone straight into the dark, spacious headspace he has while in the studio mixing alone late at night.
“I want to create a space that showcases the music styles that resonate with me on a deeper level, with the core focus of moving people through sound, not hype,” he said. “This is a gathering for the low-frequency lovers, underground soldiers, mainstream misfits, and creatures of the night. Put your phones away, pull your hoods up, and come vibe with me.”
Give Gathering a spin on Spotify, download the album for free on Bandcamp, and grab tickets to The Widdler’s forthcoming tour to experience these tracks in a live setting.
