Sébastien Tellier Marries Elegance and Ferocity in ‘Kiss The Beast’

Sébastien Tellier brings his exotic charm to the forefront once more on his latest album, Kiss The Beast.

Sébastien Tellier is a name that screams confidence. This has rang true throughout his long history in music. Over the years, the French trailblazer has created many classics, like his everlasting track, “La Ritournelle.” Give it a listen if you’re looking for a day of crate digging; it’ll get you ready to take a deep dive into Tellier’s discography.

It’s been nearly six years since the release of his last full album, Domesticated. Nevertheless, he’s been busy at work in other ways. Tellier’s multifaceted talents landed him opportunities to score three films, help produce for fellow musical artists, and somehow find the time to release a couple of EPs. But today, he delivers his sought-after storytelling in 12 tracks on his latest work, Kiss The Beast.

Already causing quite a stir before the full release, “Naïf de cœur” and “Parfum Diamant” provided a more tender and seraphic touch, while “Refresh” gave listeners a look at the more energetic side of what the album had to offer. Kiss The Beast also features inspiring collaborations with Rap icon Kid Cudi, femme baddie Slayyyter, and the ever-progressive talents of Nile Rodgers. In short, the effort plays out like a Palme d’Or prize-winning cinema.

This album was born from the duality within me. I constantly switch from wolf to sheep, from executioner to victim. Several times a day, I change faces: strong, dominant, fragile, lost. This tension runs through my music as well, between raw acoustic sounds and instinctive electro. It’s not only about depicting this inner world I navigate, but also a larger struggle: that of man versus nature. Two immense, opposing forces, with no victor, simply seeking their place.

The title track welcomes listeners with open arms and vibrant energy. It’s the perfect song to awaken your senses and prepare you for the frequency-guided adventure ahead. “Mouton,” which means “sheep,” conveys seclusion and loneliness. Fall into vulnerability as you delayer insecurities with each passing moment. Stunning guitar licks come courtesy of Nile Rodgers on “Thrill of the Night,” and they’re interwoven with Slayyyer‘s vocal prowess, birthing the next hot club anthem.

Chivalry isn’t dead, and “Romantic” is our proof. Channeling his cinema experience, Tellier puts live instruments on display, namely the violin. Graceful jazz influence lathers this delectable, digestible song, giving you satisfaction and replenishment. “Copycat” has a true story intertwined with it; it’s Tellier’s healing and rebuilding journey after his entire identity was stolen.

If you love Serge Gainsbourg, then “Animale” will strike your fancy. With a style similar to that of the French legend himself, this song shares the admiration for piano melody and a beautiful, yearning ballad to match.

Next, “Amnesia” will leave you speechless. Is it because you’ve lost your own memory, or from the song’s sheer beauty? Kid Cudi spins a story of the fine line between love and illusion, leaving you reaching for every word that escapes his lips. Ironically, that’s exactly why Tellier sought out Cudi for the song. Both artists share a deeply personal journey of self-exploration toward healing. The collaboration feels not only fitting, but inevitable.

“Loup,” which means “wolf,” comes in broodier and explores the wilder side of the album, as a wolf might roam the night. Over 150 musicians contributed to this one song. The resulting bursts of chaos create an experience like never before.

What better way to end an album than by paying homage to your family? “Un Dimanche en Famille” shares the realization of unconditional love: “I didn’t think I’d be happy, but with them, it’s better.” It serves as an excellent reminder that even your darkest days can feel lighter with the presence of a dear loved one.
