it’s murph’s first full-length effort, Weightless, solidifies his status as a musical phenom.

Garrett Murphy, better known as it’s murph, was merely a college student enrolled at the University of Southern California when he dropped his breakout hit, “Food for the Soul,” in February 2023. Capitalizing on TikTok’s virality, the up-and-coming producer used the platform to share videos captured while playing his demos for peers in his music classes.

Originally created as a final exam for his Synthesis and Sound Design course, the first iteration of “Food For The Soul” emerged on murph’s TikTok account in late 2022. Motivated by hundreds of positive comments, the producer hunkered down and revamped the promising idea, unknowingly creating the release that would change his life forever.

An overnight success story, it’s murph quickly went from DJing fraternity parties to traveling the world to perform at renowned festivals and even guest-lecturing at his alma mater. Now with three million monthly listeners on Spotify and numerous viral releases in his arsenal, it’s murph has graduated from singles to unveiling his first full-length effort, Weightless.

Throughout the nine tracks, it’s murph pays homage to his original sounds while paving a new road forward. Utilizing memorable vocal hooks and infusing productions with the classic murph bounce, “Feel it in My” and “Through My System” feel familiar yet innovative. The latter, a collaboration with Arlo and Emi Grace, served as the lead single for the album.

Grace’s airy performance instills a feeling of longing as she sings, “Don’t let me fall alone this time / Drown me in your undying light.” A common theme throughout the body of work is how the lyricists get intimate, delving into emotions and feelings toward another person. On “Chemical,” for example, Nat Slater‘s alluring vocals lend to a story of intense connection. The drop preceding the line “Is it love, or is it chemical?” reads like Slater is giving in to the feelings she is doubting, as she lets go of her inhibitions and allows herself to simply feel.

One of murph’s specialties is his knack for production that highlight his understanding of music theory while making the vocalist the star. Serving as the main attraction on the titular song, “Weightless,” Allegra Miles adds her euphoric vocals to the emotive underscore. A release months in the making, it shines with elements of future bass and melodic house for a stirring addition to his discography.

Miles also appears on the certified groover, “Wanna Get To Know Ya.” The bouncy house tune creates tension with a vocal build-up that yields into a playful bassline drop. Utilizing modulated vocals and synths, murph gives the song the illusion of pitch rising, adding texture to the soundscape.

Every tune on Weightless was crafted and placed on the tracklist intentionally. Even the interlude, “I Wanna Love Ya,” adds to the overall listening experience. As the only track featuring a male voice, it melds swirling pads and clean percussion to create a palate cleanser of sorts before moving into the latter half of the project.

From the seamless flow of songs to the expert musicality displayed through each production, it’s murph has delivered one of the strongest debut LPs in recent electronic music. Released independently, the effort is a testament to his growth since emerging on the scene. It’s only up from here for it’s murph’s career.

The debut full-length release from it’s murph is out now! Head to the streaming platform of your choice to listen to the masterpiece that is Weightless.
