Adventure Club Delivered a Blast from the Past on Throwback Tour in San Jose

Adventure Club touched down in San Jose to celebrate their hit tracks on the Throwback Tour and delivered a nostalgia-filled performance.

Back in June, dubstep duo Adventure Club announced the massive Throwback Tour, catering to fans who have been clamoring for this for years. Since then, the duo has brought their iconic records to major cities, including Houston, Chicago, and Vancouver, as well as festivals like Bass Canyon. Adventure Club stopped in San Jose, CA, just as I was celebrating my birthday, and we were able to attend a jam-packed edition of the Throwback Tour.

Since it was my birthday weekend, I celebrated in style. Before getting to Adventure Club, Mikey Barreneche, one of EDM Identity’s Artists to Watch in 2024, popped in for a surprise set in the city, and I couldn’t miss my chance to see him. I’m not typically one to attend house shows, but Mikey Barreneche is one of the anomalies that can even make this hard dance fanatic get groovy on the dancefloor.

Mikey threw down in San Jose for an hour and a half, filling his set with banging originals and electrifying records from the best in the scene. Even as an outsider to house and techno, I could tell he was putting on a masterclass. I highly recommend checking out Mikey Barreneche whenever you get the chance, because soon enough, he’ll be on all your favorite lineups.

Finally, it came time for Adventure Club’s Throwback Tour at the San Jose Civic Center. This venue is iconic in its own right, but it’s also too familiar, having been so many times through the years. The real magic came from all of the talent that brought the heat during every set. I caught the tail end of MACHAKI, and I was nicely surprised, given that I’m far from a basshead.

NEOTEK stunned with his set, engrossing me with the heavy beats blasting through the speakers.

I’m not extremely familiar with subgenres of bass music, but NEOTEK’s set was like future bass turned filthy dubstep with riddim sprinkled in. Sorry, bass music purists, but that’s what it sounds like to an outsider. The important thing is that NEOTEK won me over, and I’m definitely catching him the next time he’s in town.

This event wouldn’t have been the Throwback Tour without some veterans, and Adventure Club brought along Borgore for this date. It’s admittedly been years since I last caught the dubstep artist, but he came with a vengeance for this set. He started with heavy tearout tracks, which have been my favorite to hear live in the bass world.

Then, he moved on to more traditional dubstep records. He threw in some unexpected throwbacks like “Unicorn Zombie Apocalypse” and even a hardstyle edit of “Satisfaction.” I needed that after a weekend of house and dubstep.

I ended up sitting on the balcony to watch Adventure Club, and I’m glad I did.

The Throwback Set was carefully curated to be more of a spectacle as opposed to a freestyled set. While I enjoyed hearing all of their iconic tracks like “Crash 2.0,” “Dreams,” their remix of “Lullabies,” and a VIP of “Internet Friends,” I simply couldn’t shake the feeling that throwback sets aren’t for me anymore.

Adventure Club are proper legends, and nobody can take that away from them. Still, this event mirrored the emotions I felt when I saw Galantis earlier this year. Taking a trip down memory lane is fun, and nostalgia is one hell of a drug, but I found more excitement in discovering new artists like NEOTEK and listening to records I’d never heard before with Borgore. All in all, these types of events confirm to me that there’s always something more to discover in dance music, and that’s the best part.

If you’re looking for a dose of nostalgia or want to discover some fresh new artists, snag a ticket to the remaining dates on the Adventure Club Throwback Tour on the official website!
