Harvey Sutherland’s Glitch-House Album, ‘Debt,’ Explores the Cost of Creativity

Harvey Sutherland releases a 10-track album, Debt, featuring They Hate Change, Vicky Farewell, and Julian Hamilton via Clarity Recordings.

Funky, glitchy, and minimal are all adjectives that describe the newest work of Australian producer, synthesist, and DJ, Harvey Sutherland. Inspired by the challenges that come with being a creative, Debt comprises ten tracks inspired by what it costs to grow and survive as an independent artist.

Prior to his sophomore release, Harvey had already made noise within the electronic scene. His 2022 debut album, Boy, followed a roster of hot remixes for artists like Disclosure, Khruangbin, and Chromeo, and he’s also shared the stage with Hot Chip, Maribou State, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Looking to go beyond his disco repertoire and charged up from a “neurotic funk” rabbit hole, the Melbourne-born artist was ready to deliver something different.

Right off the bat, the album title nods to literal financial strain, but also the more abstract emotional and social obligations we accumulate as artists, friends, partners, and parents. Each cut moves forward with the economy of a producer who understands what a dancefloor needs without overcomplicating the mix. Tracks such as “Chop Chop, Movie Boy,” “Flash!,” and “Remember” with Vicky Farewell are carried by glitches, clicks, and pops. Meanwhile, “Body Language” featuring Julian Hamilton, “What Do You Need To Feel Heard?,” and “Running In Place” with They Hate Change all stand out as deeper, more lyrical cuts.

Microhouse and Neurotic funk-influences bleed through tracks like “Hummingbird,” “Nobody Like U,” and “Cigarette,” which all earned strong radio support from BBC Radio 1 and community stations alike prior to the album’s release. With glitchy artwork to match, he teased bits of what he had in store for Debt throughout the year. Those tracks now find a home on the album, serving dancefloors or solitary headphone sessions.

Across ten tracks, it’s clear that this is Harvey’s sweet spot: where neurotic funk meets microhouse. He may not resolve the question he raises with Debt, but he doesn’t need to. The album exists in that space between juggling purpose, pressure, and the passions that keep artists moving. It is there that Harvey found something worth the listener’s attention, and he used it as inspiration to build out an album inspired by the creative struggle.
