In his announcement, Kaskade shared that undux resulted from him confronting challenging feelings head on.
When Kaskade set out to write his next album, the music didn’t come as easily as it perhaps once did. On the other end of a period of difficult personal reflection this summer, he’s finally putting the finishing touches on a studio-length effort titled undux. It releases on December 4 on Monstercat and his own Arkade imprint.
In a promotional video, Kaskade (real name Ryan Raddon) revealed that his earlier attempts to write an album proved unsuccessful. “The process was frustrating,” he shared. “I was making music, but it didn’t feel honest. So I shelved what I had, let some time pass, and tried again later.”
When he returned to the studio, however, he wasn’t prepared for the feelings that came up during his creative process. “Same results,” Raddon said. “All of this was happening while I was facing what felt like a mountain of personal challenges. I was sad and lonely, and the music reflected that. This made me uncomfortable, so I stopped.”
This summer, when Raddon resolved to write the album at any cost, he let his emotions wash over him until he came out on the other side. After he “just let it happen,” he said, he “could feel things getting better,” until he arrived at a collection of songs worthy of a proper release.
“I felt hopeful,” Raddon explained. “undux became a study of that hope and the beauty that comes from having faith in something bigger than ourselves with whatever we’re going through. I hope whoever listens to it can connect to it in that way.”
Raddon released two Christmas albums in 2017 and 2023 as well as a collaborative effort alongside deadmau5 in 2024. But undux — which shares its name with his recent concert series — marks his first solo album that isn’t holiday related since 2015’s Automatic, which arrived at the height of the commercial EDM explosion.
In his promotional video, Raddon stopped short of disclosing what personal trials he was going through during his early attempts at writing his next album. Almost one year ago, however, his wife filed for divorce after almost 28 years of marriage.
