Berlin-based DJ and producer Frida Carlos releases a new three-track EP titled Mantra on the label Minimal with Love.
Having grown up immersed in music, Frida Carlos started producing hip-hop before seamlessly transitioning into dance music. And it’s like he’s found his calling, as tantalizing, stripped-down cuts layered with minimal and dub is clearly his specialty. His new EP, Mantra, demonstrates this perfectly. It has landed on the label Minimal with Love.
Serving as the imprint’s third release, Mantra solidifies Frida’s stance on minimal. It tells the story of how he fell under the hypnotizing spell of Berlin clubs and their tastefully understated music scene. After establishing himself in the underground, Frida is here to show that music is not only meant to be heard, but also felt.
On Mantra, each track is expertly crafted and full of pulsating energy. He keeps things subtle yet deep, pensive, and atmospheric. The opener, “Mantra,” sets the stage, taking you on a mesmerizing ride through emotion. “Dub City” dives even deeper, with a little more bass, while still focusing on the less-is-more minimal vibe. Rounding out the EP is “Marching Band,” a song full of percussion and subtle progression that achieves a lot without doing too much.
Frida Carlos is a skillful master of minimal. He’s learned to add the right amount of layers and bass. His delicate touch, meshed with his futuristic thinking and at-home-listening vibe, keeps his music uncomplicated and fresh.
