TroyBoi Pays Homage to His Heritage on New EP, ‘Rootz’

TroyBoi reminds us how heavily culture can influence sound on his latest EP, Rootz.

TroyBoi aka The Don of Trap has established himself as one of the leading trailblazers of the genre. His ability to transform the typical hard-hitting beats we all expect from the genre and fuse them with diverse global rhythms has caused a notable ripple in the scene.

With his Hear 2 Move fall tour nearly upon us, fans are eager to get lost in the groove with TroyBoi. Select locations in the US will be blessed with his presence, including Minneapolis, Houston, and the recently added Atlanta. Lucky fans in these locations will not only get to hear some of his classic cuts played out, but also some new additions to his discography.

What additions, you might ask? Today, TroyBoi has taken over the airwaves again with another musical masterpiece, this time with a deeper meaning for the artist. Rootz sees TroyBoi pay his respects to his Indian heritage. This EP features some of India’s most prominent names, making Rootz a vivid blend of South Asia and its worldwide diaspora.

We start our exploration with the help of Amrit Maan on “Masala.” The chopped-up rap vocals, infused with traditional Indian cultural sounds, serve as the perfect segue into what the EP has to offer. “Okay” features a sassier delivery from Jazzy B, allowing listeners to experience Bhangra-style sounds. We slip into something a bit sexier as “Kamli” enters. Expect to drop as low as the bass on this spicy little number.

You’ll be “Beggin” for more when BombayMami takes over. Her confidence is key in this track, wrapping you around her little finger with every word she delivers, accompanied by “real hot” percussion and angelic flutes. Finally, “Kabhi” takes the stage, buoyed by Lata Mangeshkar‘s Earth angel voice. This history-making track marks the first time Lata’s vocals have been approved for use outside a Bollywood film, which solidifies just how groundbreaking Rootz truly is.

Listen to Rootz on your Spotify or your favorite platform, and follow TroyBoi on his socials to see what he’s up to next!
