VILLA Showcases Her Artistic Journey on New EP and Short Film

VILLA takes center stage with the release of her three-track V project, which arrives alongside a short film that adds even more depth to her soundscapes.

Trap might’ve taken a backseat to other styles of bass music, but artists like VILLA are helping thrust it back to the forefront and make the future of the genre brighter with each passing year. This Los Angeles-based DJ and producer has been on a roll over the past few years, dropping off massive tunes on labels like Sable Valley and Bassrush Records. Yet she’s also continued to carve out space for her dynamic sound with self-released tracks that have hit hard, and now she’s returned with her largest project yet.

VILLA has become known for her singles in the trap scene, but now she’s taken the next leap forward in world-building with the release of her debut EP, V. This three-track ride, which is out now via Create Music Group, is more than just a collection of tunes that pummel listeners with hard-hitting drops, vocal stabs, and more. Instead, it’s a glimpse into VILLA’s journey as an artist with its conjoined short film offering a visual component that strikes home.

‘V’ in essence is a short film that depicts my journey as an artist. It’s a story of people telling me I can’t do something, the internal battles I face as an artist, and the rebirth that comes with reclaiming my power as an artist.

VILLA

The film opens with VILLA in a room, surrounded by alarm clocks that are all going off. As the drop for “CANTTELLME” kicks in, she begins smashing them, only for an unknown figure to blindfold her and whisk her off to a new room. That first track takes viewers back to the trap sounds that dominated 2016, effectively representing VILLA’s early years and the frustrations that arrived with facing adversity and rejection in the scene as a rising artist.

VILLA is placed into the second room, one filled with mirrors, as the alarm clock blares once again. “In the music industry, everyone is trying to choose which version of yourself they want you to be,” she said. “This scene is meant to portray the past versions of yourself as an artist that you’re constantly faced with while you’re trying to evolve.” The emotional tones on its conjoined track, “RUN,” and the imagery of mirrors and smoke align with the way that many view the music industry as a whole.

Those who find their way through the meandering path of the scene typically come out on top, and that’s exactly what VILLA showcases when “WATCHME” kicks into gear. Now in the third room, she finds herself drenched in rain but refreshed and renewed while dancing to the sounds of the high energy tune that features an experimental twist. It’s a celebratory end to the ride that doubles as a welcome to VILLA’s new era.
