Out now on Anjunabeats, Rave Digger showcases Genix’s love of trance anthems and brings everything full circle.
British DJ and producer Genix has released his newest EP on Anjunabeats, Rave Digger. The eight-track record features classic trance sounds melded with up-to-date production to create certified club bangers.
A mainstay of Anjunabeats since 2013, Genix is known for blending multiple genres into his mixes. His debut album, 199(X), served as both a love letter to rave culture and a departure from his usual style of trance. Then, YOU.ME.NOW combined old school house, techno, and breakbeats, creating a sentimental ride from start to finish.
Both were released on Anjunabeats, and each symbolizes Genix’s fearlessness as a musician. He never shies away from trying something new, which almost always pays off. But as a name long synonymous with trance, he’s returning to his roots with Rave Digger.
“I absolutely love old records from the ’90s, an era I grew up in as a kid, shared Genix. “I find a lot of inspiration in the music, I write from memories and good times listening to music from past years.”
The title track off this EP is a revamped version of MC Lethal’s 1992 single of the same name. Genix incorporates the latest in production while maintaining its classic trance sound. After Genix debuted it during his Battersea Power Station set earlier in August, this tune has become part of his arsenal.
“This track has complete summer vibes… bringing the original track released in 1992 by MC Lethal back to life with a more modern production approach,” Genix said. The album also features a “Rave Digger” breaks mix, complete with a syncopated beat and higher energy.
Up next, “Dreams” is a collaboration with British DJ James Dean, who dropped it at Creamfields last year. Sampling the 1980 Chaka Khan track, “Clouds,” it delivers the whole package: airy vocals, syncopated piano, and an upbeat vibe. Altogether, it’s like an old friend welcoming you back to the dancefloor.
Also on the EP is the previously released “Amnesia,” which hit the airwaves on July 4. An ode to the Ibiza venue of its namesake, this song marked his return to his trance roots. It’s a classic choon whose ’90s and early aughts influence is obvious. It takes me back to my baby raver days, when people would running in place all over the dancefloor.
Rounding out this EP are extended releases of the aforementioned songs. This whole album speaks to my trance-loving soul. My only complaint is that the extended mixes aren’t long enough for my liking.
The calendar may say 2025, but after listening to Genix’s newest offering, it may as well be 1999-2000. I love reworked rave anthems; they just hit differently.
