Known for his lush production and dancefloor-ready grooves, Schmoop has released his latest four-track project, Afterglow.
Schmoop is undoubtedly a favorite name within the halftime and glitch-hop niches of the bass music community. Playing support with the likes of Tipper and Jade Cicada from the start of his career put him in front of the exact audiences who love his style. While he’s not limited to just one genre category, you can hear Schmoop’s signature details in everything he creates, be it downtempo, halftime, or even jungle.
After playing direct support for Tipper at the massive Tipper & Friends event at The Gorge Amphitheatre last month, Schmoop is rounding off his summer with the release of four new tracks on Afterglow. This theme choice signifies the continued creative impact of past experiences and a sense of hope and beauty in the face of change.
Afterglow kicks off with its namesake track, and it’s an instant classic. Trying to sit still while this one is on would be a challenge. Using just the right amount of sample flair amongst the head-nodding basslines makes for a strong start to the EP and an obvious choice of name for the collection.
The Japanese practice of “Kintsugi,” a form of pottery, means to create beauty in the broken. This method involves filling in cracks and repairing breaks in pottery using silver or gold to create a unique and beautiful result. Another dancefloor heavy hitter that gets even weirder than the first, Schmoop must have felt this track was perfectly imperfect when choosing its name. The drums come out to play on “Haymaker” for a funky, jungly beat before Afterglow concludes with a dreamy offering of downtempo in signature Schmoop style on “Converge.”
Afterglow is out everywhere now, so head to Spotify to listen or grab a copy on Bandcamp to get a taste of Schmoop’s unique production for yourself.
