Cut Copy revealed that their seventh studio album, Moments, is due out on September 5 and dropped a psychedelic anthem, “When This Is Over.”
For over two decades, Australian electronic music act Cut Copy have been crafting feel-good synth-pop anthems that blur the lines between indie rock and electronic dance music. Originally a solo bedroom recording project by Dan Whitford, the outfit evolved into a full-band powerhouse in 2001 with the addition of guitarist Tim Hoey, bass player Ben Browning, and drummer Mitchell Scott.
With a GRAMMY nomination, an ARIA Award, and more than 1,000 sold-out live shows across the globe, Cut Copy continue to captivate fans with their electrifying energy and have cemented their status as one of the most dynamic live acts in electronic music. Following their 2020 album, Freeze, Melt, the band have kept the momentum going with smaller projects and remixes.
This fall, after five years of growth and evolution, Cut Copy are ready to translate everything they’ve experienced into a fresh, new offering. On September 5, they will release their seventh studio album, Moments, via Cutters Records/The Orchard.
Stylistically everyone in the band loved the sonic palette of the last album. It felt clean, modern and emotive, but still like Cut Copy. We tried to keep that modern approach, but turn it into something more energetic, psychedelic and euphoric, seeing how that approach could evolve and work on a dancefloor, not just an ambient context… Dance music is about connecting with one another after all. Euphoria bubbles away under the surface in most of the songs and I think that’s the Cut Copy DNA shining through.

At its core, Moments represents a heartfelt return to the familiar. Across nine tracks inspired by genuine feelings and different perspectives, the album blends a wide array of influences, from trip-hop, rock, synth pop, and electronic music. Listeners will be invited to feel and understand how the band navigates profound personal changes. It’s like a sonic escape, whether in the comfort of your home or the energy of a festival crowd.
Whitford said, “Since our last album release, five years have passed. In that time, I had a child, people around me fell in and out of relationships, the world went through a global pandemic, and there has been a myriad of social and political upheavals. So I guess there’s been a fair bit on my mind, and for me, making this album has been a way of processing it all.”
To give the fans a preview of what to expect in the album, Cut Copy have unveiled their latest single, “When This Is Over.” The track sparkles with rich, organic textures and a lively, bouncy beat. As stirring vocals of a children’s choir start to emerge at the peak, the song takes on a psychedelic quality, one that is filled with warmth and emotion.
“The song is about a relationship that has started to unravel,” said Whitford. “But also a bit more globally about trying to find empathy when parties are facing in seemingly opposite directions. Over the course of the song, the mood progresses from conflict to a sort of truce-like resolution. As humans, sometimes it’s hard to find common ground when hurt runs deep, but as the song says, ‘we’re more the same than you’ll ever know.’”
Coming this fall, Cut Copy will also be bringing their shimmering, dancefloor-ready live sets back home to Australia with tour stops in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and a performance at the Wanderer Festival at Pambula Beach. They’re also making sure that the fans across North America and Mexico will get to enjoy an unforgettable party, with additional shows in major cities including Seattle, San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, and more.
