Solarstone Unveils Gorgeous Soundscapes on ‘innermost’

Solarstone weaves a story filled with stunning sonic textures with the ten tracks on his latest studio album, innermost.

If there’s one word that would describe the soundscapes that Solarstone has crafted throughout his career, it would be “pure.” That word helped define his music in more ways than one, transitioning from his studio productions and stunning sets to the name of his growing collection of labels helping shape the trance and progressive scenes. This week, Solarstone continued his mission of bringing sublime sonic textures to the masses by releasing his latest album, innermost, on Black Hole Recordings.

Bucking the trend of many artists in the scene, Solarstone has always looked beyond the dancefloor for his creations in the electronic music space. “Good music demands that you push yourself, and the best of it also forces you to take risks, and I’m more than aware that ‘innermost’ inherently carries some of the latter,” Solarstone shared. “In its native form, this is not a club album, but then I didn’t see 2020’s ‘island’ as one either. I believe that area is better addressed by my singles (‘Shards,’ ‘Hope,’ ‘Sovereign,’ ‘Thinking Of You,’ and so forth) and the Pure Trance albums.”

Previously released singles “shivelight” and “sonata” opened the sonic gates of innermost, setting the tone for the adventure that Solarstone would take listeners on. New tracks that have now seen the light of day, like “dream sequence,” “boy,” and “underground” with Evan Henzi all impress as well while showing off the dynamic range that he brings with his productions.

One of the album’s standouts, “star” with Susie Ledge, was born from a session where Solarstone says he had Sabres Of Paradise’s “Smokebelch” in his head and an Enya sample as a placeholder vocal. “With her Gaelic-inspired harmonies and song, Susie brilliantly picked up on that theme,” he shared. “This was another track that took an age to perfect, but timewise, it was nothing compared to the title track itself. It took a week alone just to master the piano melody for ‘innermost,’ and emotionally, everything from the last five years somehow got bound up into it.”

Others, like “your sacrifice,” offer even more depth with lyrics that Clara Yates penned about her father. “As I read through the lyrics, I recognised they were immediately personal to her, but she was also expressing sentiments that I believed most could relate to,” Solarstone said. “That was personally inspiring.” His inspiration from those lyrics led to the creation of another sublime tune, “over the mountains.” Meanwhile, the final track, “complicated,” ties the album up with a nice bow. Its slow, steady beat guides you to a bliss-like state with lyrics exploring new love and the moment that an expectation meets life head-on.
