If we didn’t know any better, we might suspect that Partiboi69 is a bad influence on Skream.
What do you get when you put a classic dubstep icon-turned house music DJ in the studio with a living, breathing dance music meme? The answer is “Pound Town,” a track on HARD Recs that resulted from the creative partnership between Skream and Partiboi69.
Marked by a high tempo and the raunchy ghetto house lyrics for which Partiboi69 is well known, “Pound Town” is sure to get a reaction on any dancefloor. Skream (real name Oliver Jones) lends his wonky style of production to the cause, ensuring the single a longer lifespan on dancefloors across the world than it would have as a crude gag alone.
Who are Skream and Partiboi69?
Jones gained notoriety in the UK dubstep scene of the early 2000s, releasing dubplates as a teenager that received key early support from Hatcha. He went on to work closely with Benga, another legend in the game, and gained international fame as dubstep became a hot commodity overseas. In 2013, he announced that he would no longer play dubstep on the grounds that “the movement is over.”
By comparison, Partiboi69’s rise came much later. Based in Melbourne, he originally played under the name Stingray — but he rebranded as Partiboi69 in 2018, and the project gained significant traction during the pandemic. By the time nightlife switched back on, Partiboi69 was well known for his offensive brand of humor and impressive skill behind the decks.
The two artists became friends in 2020, and Jones appeared on Partiboi69’s Live From The Stingzone mix series the following year. Partiboi69 subsequently made appearances at Skreamizm events, and the two recorded “Pound Town” at Insomniac’s LA studios between the two weekends of Coachella 2024.
