TOKiMONSTA Invites You to Dream on ’Eternal Reverie’

in Album Review

TOKiMONSTA’s latest album is a portrait of her ”heart, late-night ideas, and everything in between.”

On TOKiMONSTA’s new album, Eternal Reverie, Anderson .Paak, who’s a longtime collaborator and friend, opens up in a moment of vulnerability. “I’m always in a rush to be closer to you / I feel like I’m on somethin’ / This feels like my moment to follow through,” he confesses on “On Sum,” a bouncy electronic R&B track that also features rapper Rae Khalil. In these lines, he wants to take a chance, hoping that his romantic interest will feel the same.

These pent-up thoughts reflect a universal experience, one in which we imagine our crush shares our feelings and hope that one day these self-scenarios can turn into a reality. TOKiMONSTA, along with the rest of her collaborators on this album, is encouraging us not to just dream about our deepest passions but to actively pursue them.

Eternal Reverie is the seventh LP in TOKiMONSTA’s discography, and although it’s a running cliché to write that an artist’s latest release is their most personal work, this album is not another iteration of that used expression. It’s a portrait of her “heart, late-night ideas, and everything in between,” as each track is an honest reflection of her artistic and personal journey.

On “For You,” dedicated to her friend Regina who passed away from cancer in October, TOKiMONSTA and Kaelin Ellis build a serene world using just instruments—leaning on gentle guitar licks, hazy soundscapes, soft synth chords, and bare beats. The track stands as one of the album’s most tranquil moments, reminding us that not all dreams are about the future but rather that some are about taking a moment to reconnect with those who we’ve lost.

Other tracks—such as “Say Tell Me,” “Reverie,” and “Infinity’s Embrace”—are destined to be fan favorites, as they demonstrate TOKiMONSTA’s signature hallmark: ambient soul and bold, experimental beats. These atmospheric songs create a beautiful tension—where soul-searching and risk coexist, creating an intimate experience that is as emotionally honest as musically daring. Although these tracks exude a breezy aroma, the album radiates a freeing, upbeat energy, which is especially heard on “Lucky U.”

The second track kicks off with strobing drum kicks while misty piano melodies and elegant arrangements decorate the background. Yet what gives this song an emotional thrust is Gavin Turek, as the power of her soothing vocals resonates a call to the dance floor. “Said it before / This is your moment / Don’t run away with nothing / Now that you’re here / I am the focus,” she sings. Her voice creates a dream state that liberates your fears and blurs your sense of reality.

Eternal Reverie also positions TOKiMONSTA between grief and healing. The album was originally slated for last fall but was postponed because of her friend’s health. She has expressed on social media that she faces “immense guilt” as she takes steps to move forward in life, yet she recognizes that sharing music is a way to honor her friend, “as it has always been a way for us to heal and uplift.”

Those who have lost loved ones will recognize the guilt and grief that TOKiMONSTA has expressed. Moving forward can feel impossible, as it means envisioning a future without those you love. However, with time and support comes healing, and this album is a reminder that healing and dreams don’t follow a timeline. In fact, it’s a vehicle for acceptance and empowerment, urging us to embrace every dream—no matter how big or small.
