Acclaimed Series ‘Severance’ Taps ODESZA to Reimagine Score

ODESZA teams up with Apple TV+ hit series Severance to remix the show’s score.

Welcome to the Severed Floor of Lumon Industries. Here at Macro Data Refinement we’re providing your innie a gift: some “Music To Refine To,” featuring electronic duo ODESZA.

In collaboration with hit Apple TV+ series Severance, ODESZA has unveiled a new rendition of the show’s theme song. Fans of both the show and duo were given a teaser the day prior to release showing Harrison Mills and Clayton Knight in front of the Lumon logo. Immediately speculation began, and today, a surprise 23-minute mix was released.

ODESZA put their touch on the often unsettling, ambient music from the show composed by Theodore Shapiro. The full mix is presented as a seamless, eight-hour audiovisual loop featuring footage from the series.

“We wanted to take people on a journey and give a wider breadth of music and play off and reinterpret Teddy’s score in a unique way,” Mills said to Billboard. “We put different chords under a lot of his melodies, while also trying to stay true to the vibe of the show, which is kind of creepy and subversive.”

The mix will definitely satiate ODESZA fans as the duo are currently taking a break. Having finished the massive tour for their album The Last Goodbye in the summer of 2024, they are stepping back to recharge and focus on their next chapter. The last time this happened, after A Moment Apart, they largely went dark over their three-year hiatus, leaving many quite sad. Fun projects like this are therefore welcome.

The pairing of ODESZA’s often atmospheric and ethereal music with Severance goes hand in hand. The show, now in its second season, follows a team of Lumon employees who choose to undergo severance, a procedure that neurologically separates their experiences inside and outside of work. Though they are aware of one another, “outies” and “innies” do not share memories or personalities as the innies working day-to-day at the elusive biotechnology company.
