London-based DJ and producer Napes has dropped his first-ever release on 1985 Music with the drum and bass-fueled Shooters Hill EP.
Napes is among the slew of rising producers beginning to make a name for themselves in London’s underground scene. It didn’t take long for listeners to vibe with his sound, as he turned 1,000 SoundCloud followers into 25,000 in just six years since launching his project.
Known for making jungle, grime, and breakbeat, Napes’ edgy style and forward-thinking sound design were undoubtedly a perfect fit for Alix Perez‘s 1985 Music imprint. While many artists might debut on the coveted label via compilation with a single or two, he had the honor of making his first release a full four-track EP, Shooters Hill.
The Shooters Hill EP is perfect for listeners who are unafraid unique drum patterns or breakbeats. The titular track with Snowy opens the release and exquisitely introduces Napes’ signature sound, with samples and breaks reminiscent of classic 2000s jungle and suitable for any dark dancefloor. The second tune, “Deja Vu 93.2,” contains an insane bassline that would make any dubstep fan’s toes curl, with the track evolving into further madness as it continues to its second drop.
Napes’ erratic, drum-fueled madness continues on “North Road” before getting extra weird to close out the project on the final tune, “Tokyo Drifting.” Its repetitive sample atop chaotic breakbeats makes for a psychedelic soundscape that you just have to hear for yourself to determine if it is a good or bad trip.
Napes’ Shooters Hill EP is available everywhere for streaming now, so head to Spotify or your preferred platform to check out these unique beats.
