Berlin-based synth trio Dina Summer returns with their sophomore album, Girls Gang, and it’s a wholesome tribute to goth and freak culture.
Dina Summer, a synthwave project birthed from the minds of Kalipo and Local Suicide, has quickly become a favorite amongst the greater goth community. Kalipo and Local Suicide, separately, are two established names within the scene. The decision to join forces, so far, seems to be in the best interest of both the band and their fan bases.
Following a successful first collaboration, the band’s long-awaited second album, Girls Gang, via Iptamenos Discos, is a heartwarming;y average tribute to classic goth, outsider, freak, and weirdo culture. Sonically, Girls Gang is a post-punk, synthwave, darkwave, EBM, and synthpop starter pack. It’s an easy listen and a great essentials album for any baby bats looking to venture into the darker, indie side of electronic music.
Girls Gang magnifies a “goth 101” aura with both its sounds and its lyrics. On the title track, the trio affectionately references pioneering goth band Bauhaus, as well as goth baddie icons like Morticia Addams, Siouxsie Sioux, Elvira, and Lydia Deetz. The eerie, celestial-sounding “Alien” is an ode to the outsiders and a call for acceptance. The song also harkens back to ’80s electronic music with Kraftwerk-inspired elements.
The album doesn’t try to reinvent the synth wheel in any way. If anything, Girls Gang is a reminder that there’s a lot of rich history in the synth realm that deserves to be showcased. The track “Halkidiki” feels like an ’80s retro wave video game. “Schaull & Rauch” is a classic post-punk track reminiscent of Soft Cell and Joy Division.
Throughout the album, Dina’s vocals cement her place as yet another prominent female figure within the scene, next to the likes of Siouxsie, Miss Kittin, and Marie Davidson. Girls Gang is a sonically average addition to the ever-growing world of indie synthwave. Its intent and endless references to the synth goths that laid the path before them are where the album has rightfully earned its flowers.
