Hex Cougar Delivers Genre-Defying Sophomore EP, 'Embody'

Hex Cougar returns to BREAK ROOM Records with his highly anticipated five-track EP, featuring collaborations with VARI, FATE, and Malixe.

Trap music is once again on the rise, and with it, Los Angeles-based producer Hex Cougar has returned in full force by releasing his first EP in five years. Known best for his contribution to the trap and hardwave scenes, his immersive soundscapes have landed him collaborations with pivotal producers, including RL Grime, Party Favor, Alison Wonderland, and Illenium. Launching his label Alter/Ego in 2020, Hex Cougar released a string of singles while giving underground talent a platform to display their talents, aiding in the resurgence of trap/wave.

While at the helm of Alter/Ego, Hex Cougar has now brought his long-awaited sophomore EP, Embody, to BREAK ROOM Records. This EP serves as the first substantial release for the label, building on their intention to break the mold while pushing the sounds of trap and hardwave. Delivering five distinct tracks, the visionary has continued to show excellence in creating emotionally-driven soundscapes exploring a spectrum of emotions.

Embody, my sophomore EP, is symbolic of my tumultuous and emotional relationship with music over the past four years—falling out of love with it, and then slowly, patiently falling back in love. From moody and introspective to brash and aggressive, the EP covers the whole range of emotions that I’ve felt over these past few years.

Embody’s lead single, “Ultra,” was released in conjunction with the launch of BREAK ROOM Records. A collaboration with VARI, the hard-hitting track serves up a nostalgic trap sound with cutting synths and distorted vocals. The supercharged follow-up single “Still in Love” creates a cinematic auditory experience entwining trance elements with a haunting darkness.

“Oxytocin” perfectly displays Hex Cougar’s ability to meld genres as he blurs lines with this innovative track. Featuring trap and bass production elements alongside electric guitar, the intense song encapsulates his mastery of sound design. Salt Lake City’s Malixe lends their talents to the stirring “Dream of U,” loaded with Reese bass and explosive drops, while the dynamic use of drum shines through in “Eyes” featuring FATE.
