Caspa sat down with us before B2TU XL at Mission Ballroom to discuss the show’s roots, share his thoughts on the future of dubstep, and more.
When you talk about dubstep royalty, there’s no doubt that Caspa needs to be part of the conversation. He helped usher in the genre’s sound during its earliest years through Dub Police, dropped releases that helped push it to the forefront, and has continued championing the genre over the past two decades.
Last year saw Caspa take over the decks at festivals like EDC Las Vegas, Lost Lands, and Submersion, while also performing standout back-to-back sets with his longtime friend and fellow dubstep don Rusko at Apocalypse Zombieland and the 15 Years of UKF at Drumsheds. But to start 2025 off on the right foot, he’s set his sights on one of his favorite cities in the US, Denver.
Denver has long been a home for Caspa, who said it was one of the most exciting places in America to live as early as 2014. In 2019, he hosted a five-week residency at The Black Box, where his show concept, Back 2 The Underground, aka B2TU, was born. “Each week was a lineup curated by the team and me,” Caspa shared about the show’s history. “It’s about good dubstep in a place that feels most natural for it. Small dark room with a huge sound system, simple and back to basics.”
On January 4, Caspa will help everyone in Denver kick off 2025 with a proper dose of dubstep with the latest iteration of B2TU. This year’s edition at Mission Ballroom has been stamped with XL on it, but it won’t be sonically different from the past, with Caspa stating that it’s the “same concept but just in a bigger spot with a bigger lineup.”
Those making their way to Mission Ballroom that night will be treated to what Caspa described as “dubstep in its truest form with future stars right by our side.” While the Caspa b2b Rusko set is a true draw for any bass lover, the lineup includes a wave of other talented artists. The Widdler and Ternion Sound have been at the forefront of the 140 movement in the US, while others, such as MYTHM, Chief Kaya, Torcha, and Skinny Limbs, represent the new dubstep era to show off its bright future.
This edition of B2TU might offer a glimpse of the future, but in a constantly evolving scene, anything is possible in the future. “Who knows,” Caspa said about the next five years for dubstep. “People used to ask me this 17 years ago when we first dropped fabric live 37 with Rusko and 20 years ago when I started Dub Police. I never thought I’d be doing the biggest Denver headline show to date in 2025. I’ve worked hard and manifested this for a good while.”
Caspa’s B2TU show kicks off soon, but that isn’t all he’ll be up to in 2025. He plans to roar forward with plenty of new music in the coming months. “I’ve got loads of new music dropping in 2025, including a new single collab with Ternion Sound dropping January 31 on Bassrush,” he shared as the conversation ended. “Also, there is new music with MYTHM, PEEKABOO, and Distinct Motive.”
