Victor Ruiz, OddKidOut, and Layton Giordani breathe new life into deadmau5’s iconic track “Strobe” with their respective sounds.

After a massive 25-year career, deadmau5 has concocted quite the arsenal of beloved releases. Whether you’re a fan of his early days and tracks like “Faxing Berlin” and “I Remember” with Kaskade or newer hits, like “Quezacotl” or “Infraliminal” with Rezz, there’s no denying the impact he’s left on the scene. After paying homage to his legacy at retro5pective shows earlier this year, deadmau5 is now revisiting his monumental 2009 release “Strobe.”

Arriving in the form of three remixes, the Strobe (2024 Remixes) package offers unique takes on the legendary release. Artists Victor Ruiz, OddKidOut, and Layton Giordani infuse their respective genres into “Strobe,” ushering it into the modern era. The EP follows a trend of recent spins on other renowned deadmau5 singles, like Volaris’ “Jaded” remix, John Summit’s take on “I Remember,” and Jauz’s remix of “Ghosts ’n’ Stuff.”

Lisbon-based producer Victor Ruiz’s rendition of “Strobe” kicks off the EP, launching us full-force into today’s techno sounds. With the longest runtime of all the releases at nearly seven minutes, Ruiz’s spin guides us on a gradual journey as “Strobe” creeps in under a gripping bassline before accelerating at top speed into the techno realm.

OddKidOut then slows down the pace, bringing us through a euphoric chord progression and thumping bass melodies for a track that stands tall among the others. Closing out the package is Layton Giordani, whose 15th-anniversary “Strobe” remix made waves this fall. His successful juxtaposition of the timeless rhythm alongside new-era techno resonated in the community, with its hypnotic yet nostalgic pulse landing itself as a chart-topper.

While “Strobe” is a release that stands the test of time and need not be touched, hearing other artists’ takes and perceptions of the track is enjoyable. These three remixes are welcome additions to the deadmau5 catalog, and we look forward to seeing which OG release will receive a fresh treatment next.
