Deep Dark & Dangerous celebrates ten years of dubstep with its massive Decade compilation.
It is impossible — or at least disingenuous — to talk about modern dubstep without mention of Deep Dark & Dangerous. Since its inception ten years ago, the label has become synonymous with hard-hitting and forward-thinking dubstep that still stays true to the genre’s deeper, more minimal roots.
Today, the imprint celebrates its decennial with the first volume a monumental compilation highlighting dubstep’s past, present, and future. The aptly titled Decade is a two-part monster, comprising a total of 31 tracks featuring 38 unique artists. Volume 2 releases on December 13.
Already established in the underground bass scene, DJ and producer duo Truth launched Deep Dark & Dangerous (DDD) in 2014 following the success of their event of the same name. The opening track of Decade, Truth’s own “The Illuminated,” is a fitting introduction to the subfrequent adventure to unfold. Familiar to fans as the first track in some of the duo’s recent sets, the title also alludes to DDD’s penchant for illuminating bass music’s previously unknown talent.
True to this tradition, some of Decade‘s most iconic moments come courtesy of artists that even the most tapped in deep heads may not be familiar with — yet. In Volume 1, Denver’s Breathworkz makes his DDD debut with the Coki-reminiscent “Hydra.” Several newer members of the DDD family are spotlighted: Basura, Sling Wave, ASHEZ, and MYTHM, to name but a few. There are also surprise appearances from producers who premiered earlier in the label’s history, like Sectra, and Mesck (who also created the release’s cover art).
Even the most prolific names on the Decade‘s tracklist often appear alongside lesser-known colleagues. Youngsta and Boylan team up with Brassic for Volume 2‘s introduction, playfully titled “Don’t Steal My Pint.” And Bukez Finezt collaborates with Mode London DJ Sentient in “Kolloide.”
Decade also pays tribute to fellow community builders. The Widdler does what The Widdler does in Volume 2’s “Gom Jabber.” “Sea Wolf” may be Drumterror‘s premiere DDD release, but the artist is a longtime staple in the UK scene and also admin of the popular Facebook group Shitty Tune Share For Us Wastes Who Like Dubstep.
Pre-order both volumes of Decade on digital and vinyl via Bandcamp, and look out for Volume 2 from Deep Dark & Dangerous on December 13.
