We caught up with SUNSET CHASER Executive Producer Scott Noise to discuss his 12-episode mix series in Taiwan featuring local talents and cultural connections.
As electronic music continues to rise as one of the most popular genres today, an increasing number of artists are looking towards their cultural roots for inspiration. What makes the genre so dynamic is the way different sounds can be incorporated to offer a new kind of music reflective of the stories and traditions around us.
That is what a new mix series called SUNSET CHASER sets out to achieve. It’s produced by Scott Noise and 4000, and the visionary duo aim to shine a spotlight on the new wave of creative talents emerging from Taiwan by drawing inspiration from the local culture and presenting it in an innovative style.
Throughout 12 episodes, SUNSET CHASER takes the viewers through many unconventional hidden gems in Taiwan such as the pool hall, night market, thrift store, and even a shrimp fishing pond. Each location provides a distinct backdrop for curated DJ performances by local talents, capturing the rich Taiwanese heritage and its thriving yet underrated electronic music scene.
“If I had to point to one thing that inspired SUNSET CHASER, it’d be Taiwan’s night markets and shrimp fishing pond,” shared Scott, who has more than a decade of involvement in electronic music. “These places often play loud, 170 BPM hard bounce tracks as background music. While some locals might find it a bit crude or jarring, I see it as something uniquely fascinating. That contrast really inspired me to share this cultural blend with the world through the internet.”
Filming in Uncharted Locations
The mix series’ title, SUNSET CHASER, evokes a powerful image of one who is striving towards their aspiration. According to Scott, the title comes from a term used in Taiwan to describe the decline of traditional industries, often referred to as “sunset industries.” He said, “I’m not entirely sure if this is the exact translation, but the idea is similar. Through this series, we are ‘chasing’ these scenes — moments and industries that might one day disappear.”
Choosing to film the series at offbeat locations was a bold choice, one that also brought forth many logistical challenges. Scott admitted that shooting at these spots could be chaotic, but that it lined up with his creative vision.
“The unpredictable moments were part of the plan,” he said. “We wanted things to feel more genuine for the viewers, like they’re right there in the scene, which helps them stay engaged through the whole DJ set.”
“The real challenge, though, came with some of the tougher and more dangerous spots we filmed in,” Scott continued. “For example, there’s an episode coming up where we shot in an abandoned car dismantling factory. The smell of gasoline was so strong that I felt dizzy after just five minutes, but the artist still had to do a full 50-minute set in that environment. I think that’s really what the ‘chaser’ spirit is all about.”
A New Generation
In recent years, Taiwan’s underground electronic scene has been booming with a growing wave of emerging artists. SUNSET CHASER places a spotlight on talents such as Karika, longlongty, LeNin, Molly Lin, and more.
Scott spoke about the qualities he sought in each of them and how their respective styles align with the quirky locations where they perform in. He said, “Taiwan has so many talented artists, and when picking them for the series, we mostly chose ones whose music fit well with the locations. For example, I really love the connection between Karika and the comic book store. He’s super into comics, and comic book stores are slowly disappearing in Taiwan. With his anime-inspired track selection, we wanted to show viewers a different, more unconventional side of electronic music.”
He added, “Starting from ‘Episode 6,’ we’ve been trying out more filming techniques. We’re also keeping an eye on how the earlier episodes perform to help guide what we do next. There’s a huge list of cool spots we want to feature, but matching them with the right scenes can be tricky. Personally, I’m really excited about an episode with Taiwan’s only vinyl and cassette tape factories, though we’re still in talks for that one. Definitely something to look forward to!”
Settings Sights on Southeast Asia
With an eye on the future, Scott is not ready to rest on his laurels just yet. Setting his sights on expanding the series globally, the producer wants to create a platform that unites the electronic music community and shares the unique cultural elements that shaped these vibrant scenes.
“Season 1 of SUNSET CHASER is more of an experiment to show how a DJ series can be integrated into everyday life,” he shared. “If SUNSET CHASER goes well, we’re hoping to take it to Southeast Asia — places like Bangkok, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Indonesia. We believe there’s so much more to uncover behind these sunset industries, and we want to show that through the series. For season 2, we’re already talking to platforms about a project in Bangkok, so definitely stay tuned!”
