Kidnap chronicles his shift from playing countless shows and constantly releasing music to becoming a new father on Something Lost, Something Gained.
Relentless tours and release schedules dominate the lives of many top-tier DJs worldwide, and that was the case for Kidnap, at least for most of his career. Over the past decade, the UK-based artist made a name for himself with his rich, evocative soundscapes, winning over a global fanbase who flocked to see him take the stage. Yet that life changed for Kidnap after becoming a new father, leading him to take a step back from the fast-paced lifestyle to focus on his family.
Just because Kidnap might’ve turned the dial down on his schedule doesn’t mean that he stopped producing music, though. Instead, he was able to draw upon the experiences of his past and present to create gorgeous tunes that have now found a home on his sophomore album that’s landed on [PIAS] Électronique, Something Lost, Something Gained.
Ten tunes grace Something Lost, Something Gained, and each is brimming with Kidnap’s influences, which range from melodic house and indie dance to drum and bass and classical music. Fans were treated to half of the album throughout the year, as singles like “Overgrown” with Leo Stannard, “Fortified” with Dwara, “Something To Say” with Chelou, and both tunes with Gabrielle Aplin, “Lost Without You” and “Feels Like Home,” surfaced in recent months.
Those singles set the tone for the introspective soundscapes present throughout Something Lost, Something Gained, and you’ll quickly find yourself immersed in the magical atmospheres. But there’s more to this cinematic story in the newly released album, with standouts such as “Alive” with Aaron Smith that bring in mellow vocals over a soft yet soul-stirring beat.
Two solo tunes showcase Kidnap’s innate production abilities. “Ghost Dance” is as eerie as it is beautiful, with a subtle build that creeps in from the distance to toy with your ears before diving back into the house-fueled grooves in the album’s second half. Meanwhile, the final tune, “Vision Of A Floating World,” offers stuttering elements and otherworldly sounds layered into its captivating runtime, leaving you in a bliss-like state of mind.
