Lake Hills’ ‘Picking Flowers’ Takes Listeners on a Dynamic Journey

in Album Review

On his latest EP, Picking Flowers, Lake Hills explores the sonic reaches of electronica, techno, breaks, and more as he opens the doors to a new chapter.

Lake Hills is well-known for his audiovisual artistry but should also be trending for his music. His ability to create music and form it into a visual experience and vice versa makes him an all-encompassing artist. Many may recognize Lake Hills from Ivy Lab‘s impeccable Infinite Falling Ground tour, where he accompanied them and developed all the visual components, many of which are still used today. Now, he’s turning heads with the release of his latest EP, Picking Flowers.

Out now on HARD Recs, Picking Flowers leads listeners into a delightful electronica wonderland, where the beat carries your feet into a continual blissful dance. If you’ve never experienced Lake Hills’ arrangement of sounds and influences from various genres, prepare to find your newest obsession.

This record, to me, feels like a solid addition into the direction I want to explore as an artist. For starters, it’s a dance record that explores electronic, techno and breaks. We have some faster BPMs compared to some of my recent releases this year, which are more on the broken beats and electro tip. We still include one of those tracks in this EP but the rest, you can expect four to the floor.

Lake Hills

Lake Hills begins with “Thanks For Looking,” which provokes a second glance from its audience. Each breakbeat has a counteracting gentle approach, making listeners happily tumble into a synth-filled soundscape that balances between being club-ready and nostalgia-inducing. You’ll wonder when “Soft” will take the form of its name as constant, pounding kick drums repeat. But peeking through the rough edges comes a gentle, soulful energy in contrast, complete with haunting vocals and an addictive, sultry hook.

“Cold Star” raises heart rates with its whiplash of identification. Between pulsing drums, subtle vocals, lo-fi atmosphere, and whimsical twinges of sounds sprinkled throughout, listeners will find themselves wondering what will come next. Lastly, “Picking Flowers” sets the final scene. The amount of temptation drizzled within this breakbeats-fueled track is hard to resist. As you travel through its halls of curiosity, whispers tickle your ears as the swirling melodies carry you closer to the end.
