Beloved dubstep artist The Widdler shows off his dynamic range and pure talent in his massive body of work on Subcarbon Records, Zero G.
The Widdler has been a household name within the underground dubstep community for over a decade. While best known for his signature dark 140 aesthetic, he’s no stranger to experimentation within the genre. Fans who tune into The Widdler’s releases outside of his live shows know this, but he’s here to remind everyone of the scope of his talent in his latest work on Subcarbon Records, Zero G.
Despite his significant impact on the scene and a plethora of released and unreleased material circulating within the community, he had yet to drop an official ‘debut’ album. This week, The Widdler finally dropped Zero G, a sprawling 43-track album with many years’ worth of previously vaulted tunes.
The album represents a culmination of his creative journey thus far. Its sheer volume clearly reflects The Widdler’s extensive discography. Not only does each track encapsulate his signature sound, but the project as a whole showcases a veteran level of artistic expertise. It’s only fitting that he’s about to embark on a massive US tour to coincide with the album release.
With 43 tracks, Zero G is a monster of an album, but the years spent on this project collectively are evident in each track.
It’s safe to say The Widdler’s goal of showcasing different facets of dubstep was achieved in this thoughtfully crafted work. This many tracks of the same dark-dancefloor-ready 140 sounds would be overkill from any seasoned dubstep producer, but this album sprinkles in the perfect mixture of light and dark aesthetics.
Heaters like “Echo Chamber,” “Searchin Dub,” and “Dub Headz” carry that classic, reggae-influenced dubstep sound that fans know and love, with plenty more where those came from throughout. Meanwhile, tunes like “Wind Up” and “Trigger Finger” are just a few of the gems many have been waiting for for ages that were finally released.
The tunes that are ultra-incredible to hear from him on this project are the softer, melodic offerings on Zero G, which incorporate both deep 140 elements and sprinklings of moody garage. “Real You,” “Sunrise,” “Trails,” and “I’m Going” are just a few of the standouts in that category. Their melancholy sounds are hard to listen to just once and will make you yearn for the next rainy fall afternoon.
The multiple interludes carry the vibe throughout the 43 beats, offering more chilled-out sounds between the different styles of dubstep. You’ll even hear tribal-inspired bass sounds on tracks like “Shikari,” “Totem,” and “Oracles,” which are fit for a deep quest through a foreign jungle. But in the end, this is a sonic odyssey that you’ll just have to dive into for yourself.
The Widdler’s Zero G is out everywhere now, so be sure to head to Spotify or your preferred platform to enjoy this incredible release.
