Get to Know Rising Trap Producer Lizdek

Janice Roque by Janice Roque
June 13, 2024
in Artist Spotlight, Exclusive Mix

Lizdek swung by to give us the details of his origin story, thoughts on the scene in Canada, recent shows in support of ISOxo, and more.

Bold and daring, Lizdek is one electronic music artist who isn’t afraid to go beyond his comfort zone to express his artistry. While primarily known for his electronic trap-style production, his versatility shines through from one release to the next. He first came to our attention via the Sable Valley Summer Compilation Vol. 4 last year. We were immediately captivated, and have been on a Lizdek binge ever since. “Aker” with Ivoryghost absolutely blew us away with immediate energy and an irresistible flow to make it one of the compilation’s standout tracks.

We’ve continued following Lizdek as he embarked on his artistic journey, from making his Brownies & Lemonade debut in his home country of Canada early this year in support of a rising superstar ISOxo to signing with MONTA Records just a few months later. Since then, we’ve continued seeing show-stopping releases from him including his RAW EP, and most recently, a single release titled “Element” with Godlands.

Along with the release, Lizdek took to socials to share some words on his RAW EP, stating that it was his most cohesive work to date, representing true emotions that he’s felt throughout his journey to becoming the DJ and producer he is today. With such a personal meaning behind the EP, we knew it was the perfect time to chat with Lizdek, so we caught up with him to dive into the RAW EP, his thoughts on “Aker,” and more. Continue reading for our interview below and check out his guest mix on our SoundCloud.

Hi, Lizdek! thanks for taking the time to chat with us today. We’re stoked to help listeners get to know you better!

Thank you for having me on, stoked to tell the world what’s happening!

Let’s dive into the origins of Lizdek. What was the moment that you realized you wanted to produce electronic music and perform under the name Lizdek?

I had gone under a few different names in the past, and nothing felt right until taking on Lizdek as a main project. The moment it became clear that this was the right choice was when my friends at the time found out it was my surname and started complimenting it — I was insecure about it until that exact day in freshman year of high school.

We see that you’re based in Canada. How does the local scene there affect you as an artist? Does it affect your ability to connect with the American scene and market?

Being in Canada is a very weird middle ground. While I am considered an international artist on paper, it’s still close enough to the US for me to take some opportunities in the main Canadian cities. As for stuff within the US, I’m still waiting for the right time. I would rather trust the process as opposed to rushing it — hoping that’s sooner rather than later, though!

Taking it back a bit, we first found out about you when you released your iconic track “Aker” with Ivoryghost on Sable Valley. How do you feel about that release now looking back on it?

I am very grateful for that song. It was my first time having my song played out by an EDM veteran like RL Grime, so the outpour after seeing that and showing it to my peers and longtime supporters felt incredibly fulfilling. Ivoryghost and I started the song in 2021, so to see it hold up and come out way later in 2023 is a very comforting thing coming from a producer’s point of view. Koen is also very talented and is a really cool dude; I still talk to him very regularly. I’m very excited for him to eventually release more of what he’s been working on.

Since then, you’ve gone on to play support for ISOxo’s kidsgonemad! tour and continued releasing absolute bangers, including your RAW EP released last month. What did that release mean to you?

To be able to debut in Toronto, play most of the EP before its release, and come back with lots to show for it gave me lots of energy to continue making even more for the coming months. I also met Ekali in the midst of conceptualizing the project, someone who I consider a very close friend now. He and the team he’s gathered together at his new label, Awakening Records, did so much to help me make it super special, and I’m excited to continue helping them build their platform into something beautiful.

You mentioned earlier this year that you’ve decided to go nicotine-free. How is that going for you and how has it impacted you as an artist?

It is the best decision I’ve made for my health all year. All the money I used to spend on disposables was honestly more than I’d like to admit. Nonetheless, I’m almost five months without it, and I do not regret it one bit — I now use that energy to make Lizdek the best possible brand it can be.

You recently released an incredible track with Godlands, “Element.” What was your favorite aspect of the creative and collaboration process on this one?

I love our chemistry artistically. We met for the first time in Vancouver when she played the Monstercat Compound in 2023, and she was so full of energy, which is something I was trying really hard to surround myself with at the time. About a few months later, we finally got something going, which went like butter. We also clicked heavily on the visual front, which can be seen through the whole rollout of the song the week it came out. It’s one of my favorites from the vault, and I’m very glad it’s out.

Finally, just for fun, what’s one local place you would take us for a bite to eat when we were visiting?

Anyone who plans on visiting Vancouver should go to Balkan House at least once. If you think I’m biased because I’m Serbian/Croatian, ask Atura, Angel Cannon, or Aekae, and they will tell you how hard that place smacks themselves.
