canary yellow Release Genre-be-Damned Single “Deep Eyes”

“Deep Eyes” sees canary yellow capture the eclectic fusion of styles that has come to define their project.

Denver and Los Angeles-based duo canary yellow aren’t afraid to combine ideas from traditionally disparate ends of the dance music spectrum. They cite everything from techno to dubstep as inspirations, and their latest single, “Deep Eyes” via CONDU||T, demonstrates how cohesively these elements can fit together.

Some will surely take the easy route and categorize “Deep Eyes” as UK garage thanks to its syncopated drum pattern. That doesn’t do the track justice, though. A chopped and heavily distorted vocal refrain of the song’s namesake smacks at complextro a la early Skrillex while warm yet contemplative basses liken it to fare from R&S Records‘ downtempo imprint, Apollo Records. “Deep Eyes” is perfect for the post-pandemic dancefloors on which variety is back in vogue.

CONDUIIT is the perfect home for such a stylistic amalgam. Founded by Chris Lund aka Left/Right, it provides a platform to electronic music that results from a fusion similar to that of the Los Angeles DJ and producer’s own releases. Perhaps the most notable of these was his 2023 album Big Rave Energy, whose blend of mainstream and underground elements garnered no shortage of praise from music lovers.

Tim and Mark, the minds behind canary yellow, met in the Denver scene in the early 2010s and started playing together shortly thereafter. “Waterlily,” which came out on London label CloudCore in 2022, marked their debut as recording artists. Pairing a dusty broken beat with effervescent synth work and just the right measure of soul, it signaled what was to come from the promising duo.
