Amelie Lens Delivers Trance-Leaning First Track of 2024, “Breathe”

Amelie Lens has said that “Breathe” will be her first of many new releases.

Amelie Lens spent what downtime she had during her pregnancy wisely. The worldwide techno icon has a wealth of new releases in the works, and she’s starting with the heavily trance-inspired “Breathe” via her own label, EXHALE.

When I say that “Breathe” takes clear cues from trance, I don’t mean it in the way most techno fans do when they hear anything remotely melodic. Between its sultry vocals, layered synth work, and dramatic breakdown, the single would mesh perfectly with the selections of a tech trance DJ set. It remains to be seen (or heard?) whether Lens’ upcoming releases will follow suit.

“I worked on soooo much music during my pregnancy and cannot wait to start releasing new music!!” Lens wrote in an early March social media post. “Two tracks are coming out this month! Maybe you can guess which ones as you might have heard them in my sets recently????“

In a post after her Ultra Music Festival set this past weekend, Amelie Lens hinted that her next release might be a remix of “Syren” by Rebūke and Anyma (the latter of whom was just revealed to be dating pop-electronic superstar Grimes).

As a title, “Breathe” is oddly similar to “Exhale,” Lens’ debut 2016 single on Lyase Recordings, and from which her own label takes its name. The similarities end there, though. While heavier on spoken word vocals than much of what tickles the fancy of techno purists, the latter track’s cavernous kick drums, growling basses, and heavy emphasis on foley effects are a far cry from the saccharine chord progressions that drive her latest release.

Cue up “Breathe” on Spotify or your preferred platform, and look out for more new music from Amelie Lens now that festival season is underway!
