Yulia Niko takes listeners on a reflective, spiritual journey with the release of her debut album on Armada Music, TWINSOUL.
There’s no straightforward path to becoming a music producer in today’s scene. The journey Yulia Niko has taken, for example, stems from healing. While recovering from a serious accident when she was 15 years old, she passed the time by digging through classic house, trance, and progressive records. She developed an affinity for dance music and realized how therapeutic music can be. (Yulia credits her recovery to the music she discovered during this period.)
These records would become the foundation of Yulia Niko’s intricate, emotive, and experimental tracks. Her universal yet intimate productions thrust positive energy onto every dancefloor, and this open-book elegance has garnered the producer many fans across the globe. Now, she’s opening her spirit with the release of her debut album on Armada Music, TWINSOUL.
The album, dedicated in honor of her late father, is a spiritual and reflective listen that leans on the blur of house, tranquil techno, and meditative instrumentation. The album’s opener, “Soul of the World,” brings Illinois into the mix and introduces the listener to an instrument uncommon in mainstream productions: the sitar. This experimental element immerses you in colorful crescendos as airy ballads and mystifying soundscapes sedate you, causing you to acknowledge your own psychological wounds.
Although healing does have to come from the individual, it can also be a communal experience. In the melodic track “Exito,” the Spanish lyrics from Sil Romero, supported by moving tribal percussions, treat your anxieties by encouraging you to be free and to embrace life as if the words were a gentle reminder from a close friend. And in her collaboration with Yotam Avni, “Higher,” Yulia balances a noir bassline with soothing flutes that create a cinematic atmosphere, yet it’s the cascading voice in the track that makes you feel secure.
There are moments here that also embody the passion of the human spirit, such as the kinetic number “Fire In My Soul” featuring Carn Crua. With pop-synth glamour at its center, this record uplifts your soul with its futuristic textures, soft pads, and swirling synths. Meanwhile, other tunes like “Sand” with Moullinex and “You Knew” feature an energetic drive. Every track, though, carries a patient quality. You can’t rush healing or success, but when you reflect on how much you’ve grown from where your journey first started, you notice how much the small wins have turned into big ones.
It’s why Yulia ends on a celebratory note with “Satisfaction.” The synths here feel more sunny, the bassline more groovy, and the soundscape more lush, which is a testament to the years of work that Yulia has put into her craft. In her eyes, there are no shortcuts to achieving more mainstream recognition “because I want to show [my father] that I’m a real, dedicated artist.”
