Tony H is fundraising for his nonprofit, the Bassline Beats Academy, with a mission to uplift women, minorities, and LGBTQ+ people in the scene.

Known primarily for his groovy house releases, his brands Late Night Munchies and Munchies After Dark, and his work as the Space Yacht label manager, Tony H is a valuable multi-faceted figure in the electronic dance music scene. When he isn’t behind the decks or heading up label business, he’s brainstorming ways to improve the community around him. One way in which he hopes to do that is with his new nonprofit organization, the Bassline Beats Academy.

The Bassline Beats Academy is a nonprofit organization that aims to uplift women, minorities, and LGBTQ+-identifying people in the dance music space through teaching, support, and community. While recent years have seen more diversity in dance music, it’s no secret that minorities and LGBTQ+ people are an essential factor in its existence, yet equal access and opportunity have been lacking.

“Bassline Beats Academy is a project I started because I couldn’t ignore the fact that minorities, women, and LGBTQ+ peeps aren’t getting the spotlight they deserve in club and festival lineups or in the music scene in general,” Tony said about what prompted him to launch this nonprofit. He hopes to give people of all ages and identities the opportunity to learn about music production, music theory, DJing, equipment, signing releases, and more, thereby providing equal opportunity for all.

My nonprofit is here to teach people of all ages the ropes of DJing and production. But it’s more than that – I’m here to support those who face challenges in the scene. I’m all in to crush that whole gatekeeping vibe that’s been a part of the music scene for some time. Instead, I want to share everything I know and have experienced in the music scene, from signing records to finding your way in your own music career. I’m hoping that my experience in mentoring and teaching within my own circle can now be something I can spread to impact the larger community.

Tony H plans to make the Bassline Beats Academy a safe learning haven for people through shared space, equipment, and software. This will be a physical space people can visit where they can learn, perform, teach, or just come together to connect. As with many grassroots organizations, this nonprofit will be for the people, by the people.

For that to be possible, however, funding is a key component of success. Tony H has created a GoFundMe to raise funds for equipment, a space to rent, and more. He is reaching out to the community now in hopes that they can help build the Bassline Beats Academy and join the burgeoning community.

A music lover for as long as she can remember, Janice was first introduced to electronic music in her early teens, then experienced live events in 2015 and never looked back. From house and techno, to trap, breaks, bass, and drum & bass, as long as it gets her moving and feeling something, she loves it. In 2019, she got involved in the local scene of San Francisco and gained experience in social media management and event promotions by throwing events and underground raves. You can always find her playlisting, looking for new artists to support, and reading about the history of dance music.
