Beatport’s latest Off The Record documentary points the cameras at He.She.They. co-founders Steven Braines and Sophia Kearney!
Five years ago, Steven Braines and Sophia Kearney set out on a mission to bring people together on the dancefloor, regardless of race, appearance, sexuality, or gender identity. What materialized was HE.SHE.THEY., an international label, clothing, and party brand that celebrates the courage it takes to exist in your most authentic form. In a compelling Beatport – Off The Record documentary, the window into this multi-faceted brand is thrown open.
The cameras follow the aforementioned co-founders, who discuss their childhood and the events that planted the seed for their future activism. Along the way, you’ll meet a lovely cast of experience-makers, including Management and Events Coordinator Ashraf Ejjbair, musician Campbell King, resident DJs SYREETA, WAX WINGS, and Verity Mayes, and performers Yves Saint Croissant, Alexis Meshida, Mama Stylist, and many more. Their thoughts are both educational and inspiring.
It’s very raw, and honestly, a lot of our own insecurities and past trauma are on show so it was a bit of an emotional roller coaster at times. It was a cathartic and difficult process to go through, but it was worth it. We hope it shows people they too can work hard and dream big, that they can channel their trauma into a solution that’s bigger than them to help others.

As history unfolds, viewers will also come face to face with HE.SHE.THEY.’s specific house rules, which are in fact, rules to live by outside of the dance space as well. These are listed as follows — experimentation is encouraged, a place without prejudice, trans inclusion matters, and finally, yes means yes, and everything else means no. Since their arrival on the scene, these rules have been spread throughout 50 cities all over the planet, making the world a better place in its wake.
Come to a HE.SHE.THEY. event for judgment-free self-expression and leave filled with love and a revitalized spirit. It’s as simple as that. If you want to join the diverse and inclusive community, they’re about to make their way around North America!
