Mass expirations of would-be ticket buyer accounts led Glastonbury to delay its 2024 ticket on-sale.
A month ago, Glastonbury announced that tickets the its 2024 edition would go on sale Thursday, November 2. Expired account registration would have prevented a significant number of buyers from making their purchase, prompting event organizers to postpone the on-sale to November 16 at 6pm GMT for tickets with coach travel, and November 19 at 9pm for regular GA tickets “out of fairness.”
Glastonbury announced the delay only four hours before tickets went on sale Thursday. “This is to ensure that everyone who would like to buy a ticket is registered and therefore eligible to purchase one,” reads a statement shared by the event brand on social media.
Requiring updated registration is one measure Glastonbury takes to thwart ticket scalpers. Verbiage published to its website over a month ago reads, “Any registrations submitted prior to 2020 require reviewing and confirmation before 30th September 2023, with any non-confirmed registrations being deleted on 2nd October 2023 and you will be required to submit a new registration before you can try and book tickets for the 2024 Festival and future years.”
Organizers also sent out an email reminding account holders to update their registration, but many claim that they never saw it.
Save for fallow years, Glastonbury has taken place annually in Somerset, England since 1971, when it was called the Glastonbury Fair. Over the years it has booked artists like David Bowie, Elvis Costello, The Cure, and Radiohead while drawing crowds as big as 145,000.
Glastonbury also became a prominent feature of the post-acid house UK dance music landscape. After Orbital‘s performance at the 1994 edition of the festival was broadcast on television, acts like The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, and Massive Attack began landing notable bookings at later editions of the festival.
The new registration window for Glastonbury accounts will open on Monday, November 6 at 12pm and close on Monday, November 13 at 5pm. Separate pages allow users to update registration for existing accounts or register new accounts.
