Tiësto, Niiko X SWAE, GUDFELLA Team Up On Tears for Fears Remix

Tears for Fears’ 1985 hit single “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” got the Tiësto, Niiko X SWAE, and GUDFELLA treatment.

You don’t realize how well certain songs translate into EDM remixes until you hear the finished product. “Rule The World (Everybody)” by Tiësto, Niiko X SWAE and GUDFELLA is a perfect example. It transforms Tears for Fears‘ 1985 new wave single, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” into a big room banger fit for festival main stages.

The original single’s instantly recognizable synth melody is reborn in Tiësto, Niiko X SWAE and GUDFELLA’s rendition, underscored by a faster, four-on-the-floor drum beat. Tears for Fears bassist Curt Smith‘s iconic vocal carries the listener through an intensifying buildup. At the drop, a compressed version of the core motif shimmers its way over the top of the arrangement.

Tiësto (real name Tijs Verwest) has seen many incarnations since starting his music career in the mid-’80s. He cut his teeth playing new beat and acid house, and went by Da Joker while playing hardcore and gabber in the ’90s. He achieved international superstardom while playing trance, perhaps most notably for his In Search of Sunrise compilation series. By the 2010s, he’d left trance behind in favor of the more commercially accessible sounds of the EDM era.

Niiko X SWAE have a much shorter career under their belts, having started their project in 2017 after growing up together in Dallas, Texas. GUDFELLA is also a relative newcomer to the scene — albeit one who has received support from artists like Alison Wonderland, The Chainsmokers, and Louis The Child.
