The Mayan Warrior Foundation’s Halloween benefit will help fund the debut of new mutant vehicle at Burning Man 2024.
Famed Burning Man art car Mayan Warrior has a second coming in the works. Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, a new mutant vehicle is in the works ahead of the 2024 edition of the Nevada Black Rock Desert arts gathering.
Don’t expect the same mobile art piece, though. “A new vehicle is being born,” reads a line of text that appears on the screen at the beginning of the Mayan Warrior Foundation‘s Thursday video post on Instagram. “With the heart of a Mayan.”
To that end, the Foundation will raise money in part via a Halloween fundraiser taking place in Gloria Molina Grand Park in Los Angeles on October 28. Mayan Warrior had announced the benefit in July in partnership with SoCal outfit Stranger Than.
“In light of the news we shared earlier this year, it’s only right that we say farewell to the old and welcome in new beginnings,” reads the Mayan Warrior Foundation’s post. “Now more than ever we need the support of our community in bringing to life the next chapter in this ever-so-beautiful journey.”
A description on the event’s DICE page adds: “It comes at no surprise this vibrant city is set to host our final farewell fundraiser. LA was the first city where we joined forces with our newfound amigos Stranger Than. Our first-ever Grand Park concert fundraiser tled to many more productions together beyond our wildest dreams.”
No lineup has been announced for the fundraiser at the time of writing. Mayan Warrior has shared that a “very special guest” will perform, however.
Burning Man camps and art cars operate with relative autonomy from the organization that hosts the annual gathering, requiring collectives like Mayan Warrior to raise funds for their own endeavors. The Mayan Warrior art car made its Black Rock Desert debut in 2012. With a 70,000-watt D&B Audioteknik sound system and high-profile DJ sets by the likes of Jan Blomqvist, Damian Lazarus, and Bedouin, it became a staple on the playa for a decade of Burning Man history.
On April 3, a fire broke out in the base truck while Mayan Warrior was traveling from Guadalajara to Punta Mita. It spread to the rest of the vehicle, and incinerated millions of dollars worth of decorations, lighting, speakers, and computer consoles.
