Fred Again.. and Obongjayar Dedicate Upbeat Collab “adore u” to Their Younger Siblings

Fred Again.. has delivered an effervescent track titled “adore u.” It features vocals by Nigerian artist Obongjayar.

Fred Again.. is arguably the most talked-about dance music artist to break through in recent years. From collaborating with Skrillex and Four Tet to appearing alongside the two for a landmark performance at Times Square in NYC, the English talent’s rise has proven swift and momentous. Imagine the delight of his little sister, then, as the world stops and listens to his recent ode to her: “adore u” featuring Obongjayar.

His genre-be-damned approach means you never quite know what to expect from a Fred Again.. (real name Frederick John Philip Gibson) release. In the case of “adore u,” he opts for bright synths that bubble up around heartfelt verses by Obongjayar, a Nigerian-born, London-based artist born Steven Umoh. Tension turns up ever so slightly at the bridge three quarters of the way through the song’s runtime before resolving to the tranquil harmonics that introduced the concept in the first place.

Gibson has teased “adore u” here and there in his DJ sets. Before dropping it at Glastonbury 2023, he shared that the track was dedicated not only to his little sister but also Umoh’s younger brother.

At only 16, Gibson earned an audience with quintessential ambient composer Brian Eno, who became a mentor to the young producer. Nearly a decade later, in 2019, he was involved in roughly 30% of the UK #1 singles. Before tracks like “Marea (we’ve lost dancing)” and “Turn On The Lights Again” featuring Swedish House Mafia and Future cemented the Fred Again.. phenomenon, Gibson helped produce music for artists like George Ezra and Charli XCX.

Umoh grew up in Calabar, Nigeria, and moved to the UK at the age of 17. After cutting his teeth as a SoundCloud rapper, he released his first EP, Home, in 2016. He would follow up the effort with two more EPs, Bassey and Sweetness, in 2017 and 2021, respectively.
