Chase & Status Show Everyone ‘What Came Before’

Take a trip to the past with iconic drum and bass duo Chase & Status by listening to their latest body of work What Came Before.

If you’re on the hunt for a journey back to the past so you can feel the energy of the days of raves gone by then you’re in luck because Chase & Status have the exact album to suit your needs. This legendary duo has provided some of the drum and bass scene’s most beloved albums over the years like No More Idols, Brand New Machine, and Tribe. Now, they’ve continued to flex their creative might with a fresh album for fans to feast on – What Came Before.

What Came Before is a reflection of the ride that Chase & Status has been on since they first fell in love with electronic music and the duo made this clear by stating “Every crowd, every rave, every moment has lead to this.” A hearty helping of drum and bass action permeates the entire tracklist, yet there are other elements that range from older rave sounds to samples that stir up a sense of nostalgia.

Chase & Status set the tone of what was to come prior to the release of What Came Before by dropping “When It Rains” with BackRoad Gee, “Don’t Be Scared” with Takura, and “Mixed Emotions.” All three really packed a punch in their own unique way with “Mixed Emotions” standing tall from the initial singles – and the acoustic version of the track is also sublime.

Solo tunes like “Go,” “5am,” and “Consciousness” show off Chase & Status’ innate ability to blur the timeline between the past and present. There’s something special about the first two that lean heavily on classic rave elements while the latter of the three is a dreamy ride with plenty of energy to get your feet moving and some stunning sax added in for good measure. And if you’re on the hunt for a hypnotizing soundscape to bask in then “Forgive Dark” delivers just that across its four-minute runtime.

While the first two singles featured stunning vocals, there are a few others that stood tall on What Came Before as well. “Hold Your Ground” with Ethan Holt puts the vocals front and center before a breakbeat is layered in to pick up the pace to make it anthemic at its core. Pip Millett lends her voice to “Over & Done,” another gem of a tune that found its home on this album. This one is an absolute vibe that will have anyone grooving along with it wherever it gets played.

From the first track to the last, What Came Before is a snapshot of the creative minds behind Chase & Status that offers fans a look at how the past influences the future. This album is another remarkable ride from the duo, so give it a spin on Spotify or your preferred platform!
