Joey Mallon shares his story of how he fell in love with dance music, who he’s been listening to, and some memories he’s made in the festival scene!

What was your first electronic music event?

“Throwed” Boston in 2008, some garbage 18+ club that started having random dubstep nights – it was fun but terrible. First actually memorable event was Skrillex in 2011 I believe, or I think deadmau5/ Feed Me in 2010.

What/who influenced you to attend your first event?

Random choice, I was a metalhead forever but kinda rode the “brostep”/dubstep wave into electronic music with artists like Skrillex and Excision. The first event that REALLY pushed me heavy into the electronic world was Krewella in 2013 though, which was a 4am drunk impulse decision because of friends who were interested.

What is one moment from an event that was special and why?

The highlight of my event “career” was definitely being able to catch Virtual Self’s debut show. Porter has pretty securely seated himself as the best artist ever in my opinion, and the whole VS project/nostalgia blast has been absolutely incredible. Ended up catching him nine more times within about a year-ish after the debut.

What is your favorite festival or event?

Thus far, EDC Las Vegas. Night fests are incomparably better than day fests, in my opinion, I love that EDC Las Vegas is effectively its own little electronic world. There’s really not much better in life than walking in through the grandstand gates and seeing the whole fest laid out in front of you.

What is your favorite electronic song and why?

Porter Robinson – “Language”. Porter has strongly shaped much of my taste in electronic music, and in my opinion set a standard for live performances, set structure, and visuals. “Language” just hits all the right buttons in all the right ways. it’s also, at this point, very strongly associated with some of my favorite memories such as the EDCLV 2017 fireworks, or dancing to his set at ilesoniq 2017 in the LED water fountain they have.

Who are your favorite artists?

Porter Robinson, Dabin, Seven Lions, Illenium, Above & Beyond, Wasted Penguinz, and Skrillex.

What are your favorite genres?

Trance, hardstyle, melodic dubstep, future bass, electro house. Pretty much anything you’ll hear from Ophelia, Anjunabeats, MrSuicideSheep, and things like that.

What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?

I’ve always gone out of my way to make people aware of their favorite events/shows coming up or trying to bring people together in different electronic communities. I’ve run a bunch of meetups, typically with Illenials, all across the country and it’s always been an amazing time, and a great way to meet new people. Some of my absolute closest friends I’ve met through doing this.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?

Please feel free to add/follow me on Facebook, Instagram, or whatever platform, and always say hi if you see me at events! I pretty much live at insomniac events (especially in SoCal), but I’m always traveling for different things.
