Indianapolis’ premier nightclub, REVEL, hosted YehMe2 for a raucous night of dance music.
Home Music Productions brought Chicago native Josh Young, better known as YehMe2, to REVEL Indy for a night of raucous dance music. Opening acts Cam Miller b2b Troll, Gerald Collins, and Sinclair Wheeler got the party started with sets showcasing Indianapolis’ burgeoning local DJ scene and were perfect preludes to the evening’s main event.
It had been at least two years since I last attended an event at REVEL and I was pleasantly surprised by the improvements.
The old DJ booth had been torn out and replaced with a large VIP area that could easily hold 30+ people. A video wall was added in front of the DJ booth and it added a nice artistic effect to the dance floor without overwhelming the ambiance of the rest of the club. Finally, the sound system, arguably the most important aspect of any show, had been upgraded substantially.
The culmination of these upgrades brought about a new experience to the Indianapolis nightlife life scene that was desperately needed. The other clubs on South Meridian should take note: investing money into your facility is one of the best ways to keep your dance floor full.
As soon as YehMe2 stepped behind the decks, it was time to turn all the way up.
As if to signal that it was indeed time to get down to business, YehMe2 opened his set with a filthy remix of “Jump Around’ by House of Pain. The crowd instantly picked up the energy emanating from the DJ booth and the night began in earnest. Working the crowd from behind the decks, he had a natural feel for mixing in just the right track at the right time to take you on a journey. A story being told song by song, transition by transition, throughout the evening to the delight of those in attendance.
Going into the evening, I was cautiously optimistic about how the night would unfold. I enjoy a large variety of dance music, including trap, but wasn’t sure what to expect now that YehMe2 was on his own and away from Flosstradamus. My optimism was rewarded as he showed off his skills by ensuring that no stone genre was left unturned: he mixed hip-hop, trap, pop, house, big room, electro, and bass into a collective stream of consciousness and sound that highlighted his unique abilities.
The crowd could have been larger but the vibe was just right.
Indianapolis has come a long way in garnering support for dance music acts over the past several years. Even with the improvement, promoters and event organizers find it hard to bring big names to the Circle City when events like YehMe2 don’t come close to packing out a club.
Perhaps the most frustrating thing about our scene is that the dancing, camaraderie, and general atmosphere portrayed a vibe of common purpose and levity that is more often found at a festival, indicating that the right crowd exists – it’s just about finding more of it. Phrased another way, the core group who attended this club show have an opportunity to build the scene in a way that will bring acts like YehMe2 back for years to come.
Despite that fact, YehMe2 and Home Music Productions put on a great show at REVEL, and I hope to see many more in the future.
