Learn more about EDM Identity Contributor Carolyn Blake in this week’s #IDSpotlight!

Name: Carolyn Blake
Age: 32
Current City: Minneapolis, Minnesoate
Occupation: Customer Service
Instagram: @Smilecare10

What was your first electronic music event?

Afrojack at Epic was my first “actual” event. Prior to that, I had attended small events at a nightclub when I was living in Austin, Texas; I believe it was called “Mad Classy Sunday’s”. This was where I first discovered what dubstep was. The irony of the title does not escape me; dubstep is not commonly described as “classy” (maybe in some circles, who knows!).

What/who influenced you to attend your first event?

A co-worker in Texas told me about the Sunday nights at the bar so I decided to check it out. When I had moved back to Minnesota I had discovered a few of my friends had gotten into EDM while I was away. They invited me to go to Afrojack with them; we all had a blast!

What is one moment from an event that was special and why?

The time I lost my wallet at EDCLV and had it returned to me with nothing taken from it, is something I will never forget. I don’t think I have ever experienced so many emotions so intensely, in such a short span of time!

What is your favorite festival or event?

EDCLV will always hold a special place in my heart. It is the first festival I ever attended, and I have gone 5 times (going on 6). The whole experience is like a dream/fantasy land come to life. The amount of effort that goes into making it all happen, and the energy you feel when you are there, it’s unparalleled. I must say though, ABGT250 was life-changing. I have never experienced such amazing vibes in my life.

What is your favorite electronic song and why?

“You Got To Go” by Above & Beyond. I have the lyrics “Dream on little dreamer” tattooed on my shoulder. The lyrics spoke to me the first time I heard it and still do every time I listen to it. It inspires me to never lose hope, and never give up on chasing my dreams, and that it’s okay to be a dreamer.

Who are your favorite artists?

Above & Beyond, from the moment I discovered them, have been my favorite. They have gotten me through the toughest of times, and make the best of times even better! Pretty much any artist from Anjunabeats is my second favorite. Seven Lions is another artist that I have loved from the first time I heard him, and his remix of “You Got To Go” is top notch.

What are your favorite genres?

Trance (with or without vocals), progressive trance, and deep house are at the top of the list for sure! Psytrance has grown on me lately, and a good bassline, no matter the genre, gets me every time!

What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?

I was at a show recently talking with some of my friends and two things come to mind here. For one thing, I’m “Switzerland”, by that I mean, I try to be friendly with everyone, I don’t take sides when there’s drama, and I seem to make new connections with new groups of people each time I go to a show.

Another take away from that same night is I care. I care about the people, I care about the music, and I want everyone to have a good time and feel like someone is looking out for them.

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?

I love the EDM community!
