What was your first electronic music event?
My first event was a local electronic music club night when I was living and going to school in Pittsburgh back in 2012. It was a multi-genre night with a little of everything from house, techno to big room, progressive and more.
What/who influenced you to attend your first event?
I have listened to electronic music and trance since the mid-2000’s and as I got older I started to incorporate it more and more into my listening rotation. Finally, after spending so long just listening to the music and being a fan of it I decided to start giving events a shot and the rest is history. I am so happy to have found such an amazing community of people who are passionate about music and are genuinely good people.
What is one moment from an event that was special and why?
I have to choose two just because it’s so difficult to choose one.
My first one is seeing Aly & Fila at EDC 2015 as they closed out the Circuit Grounds doing the last set (and sunrise set) on Day 3. I had run around between Neon Garden and Circuit Grounds for most of that weekend save for a handful of sets and I am so glad I decided to end with the uplifting master in Fadi. I was so overcome with emotion during his set and especially so when he dropped ‘We Control The Sunlight’ right as the sun was peeking above the speedway. It was one of the most magical moments I’ve ever experienced and I remember walking away from Circuit Grounds a complete wreck and giving complete strangers hugs because we were all there as Trance Family enjoying a perfect end to EDC Weekend.
My second one is Neptune Project’s set at Dreamstate SoCal this past year – those guys just know how to take you on a journey and it was so good that I didn’t even stage hop during their entire two-hour set. I think my favorite moment was when they dropped my all time favorite vocal track by Above & Beyond which is Alone Tonight. Also, having the privilege of knowing both Dan and Jules – seeing them rock it at both Dreamstate SF and SoCal in 2016 was amazing, and getting to share that moment with good friends and the global Trance Family was just incredible.
What is your favorite festival or event?
Dreamstate is my favorite festival by far, although I have been told once I attend Luminosity Beach Festival this year that I might have two favorites! I just wish I could take the amazing feelings that I had after both Dreamstate SF and especially SoCal in 2016 and just apply that to my entire life. You don’t even need any sort of mind-altering or chemical substance to enjoy it because there is already a natural high from the amount of positivity and sense of community that you get with the Trance Family – not to mention the incredible music and talented producers and DJs who provide the soundtrack for the weekend!
What is your favorite electronic music song and why?
I have so many favorites but one track that sticks out in my mind is “Nubia” by Aly & Fila. That track is the definition of uplifting and even with the amount of amazing music that has come out over the past two years, Nubia is still a track I come back to when I need something to lift my spirits or get my mind off something. It is probably one of my top 3 Aly & Fila tracks that they’ve done over the past few years.
Who are your favorite artists?
John O’Callaghan and Aly & Fila are definitely my favorite trance artists as I love both Subculture and Future Sound of Egypt labels and the FSOE Radio Show is one of my favorites as well.
In terms of other artists I really enjoy tech trance such as Mark Sherry, Bryan Kearney, Simon Patterson, Sneijder and Jordan Suckley. I also really enjoy the Pure Trance movement with Solarstone, and enjoy pretty much everyone on FSOE such as UCast, A & Z, Ferry Tayle and Dan Stone.
Outside of trance I really enjoy techno, progressive house and tech house with some of my favorite artists being Hot Since 82, Maceo Plex, Eric Prydz/Pryda/Cirez D, Dubfire, Adam Beyer, Chris Liebing, Grum, Alan Fitzpatrick, UMEK, Joseph Capriatti, Julian Jeweil, Jeremy Olander, Enrico Sanguiliano, Nicole Moudaber, Andrew Bayer, and more.
What are your favorite genres?
- Trance, especially tech trance & uplifting
- Techno
- Progressive House
- Psytrance
- Drum & Bass
What do you feel your “Identity” is in the electronic music community?
I’m definitely a trance head at my core, a part of the #TechTranceRevolution, and I really want to make a mark in the music industry in multiple ways by helping artists get exposure, help throw and coordinate events and ultimately making my passion for music into a career.
Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself for the readers?
We all come from different walks of life and are not always going to agree or see eye to eye on everything. Our world can seem overwhelming, unbearable, scary and difficult at times, so I personally think that something creative like music, art, raving or anything that creates this amazing sense of community is even more important during times like this. It’s a way to escape the troubles of everyday life and to take a breather from the world and its problems. To borrow from Paul van Dyk’s “Home” – “In Every Beat, We’re Closer”. Remember that practicing PLURR (Peace – Love – Unity – Respect – Responsibility) doesn’t end when we leave the rave or event either – it should be applied to everyday life!
