If you are going to EDC Las Vegas in a couple weeks, I highly recommend you head on over to the Neon Garden on Saturday to check out UMEK, a Slovenian techno legend. A staple of the festival, it will be his 6th consecutive time playing EDC. He raised over $1,400 during the EDC Week Charity Auction, as one lucky winner won a bid to mix a b2b set live onstage.
UMEK has been in the techno scene since 1993, and recently lent his expertise to help create Native Instrument’s new MOLTEN VEIL Maschine Expansion. Featuring sounds crafted by the mastermind himself, MOLTEN VEIL is aimed at producers looking for heavy-hitting, bold basslines, which are showcased in his new track, “Culminate“. The track, out now on his own label 1605, is upbeat and really showcases UMEK’s abilities as an artist, a techno artist especially.

“Sooner or later all artists return to their roots. I’ve always been known to be a techno artist, even when I wasn’t really playing and producing techno. So, when the fans and the media see you as a techno artist no matter what you deliver, then you probably are a techno artist – if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck,” says UMEK. “Jokes aside, I’ve always followed my intuition and listened to my feelings, no matter what the people thought about it. Much like Forrest Gump ‘just felt like running,’ I just feel like doing techno now. Also, techno kids have more fun. They really do.”

It’s a little known fact that UMEK is a successful entrepreneur. He started viberate.com which aims to introduce analytics and decision-making tools to the music market. As stated by UMEK, it’s goal is “to bring order and standardization into the music business and finally put an end to all that chaos”. The company owns the successful website, topdeejays.com, which analyzes social media grown for over 30,000 DJs.
