Jeff Mills to Replace Carl Cox on Movement Detroit Lineup

“Due to scheduling complications,” Detroit techno icon Jeff Mills will step in for UK superstar Carl Cox on day one of Movement Detroit 2025.

Two weeks after Movement Detroit dropped its 2025 lineup, Carl Cox has shared that he must postpone his performance at the house and techno-focused festival for another year. Replacing him on the bill is the Motor City’s own Jeff Mills.

Cox, who was slated to debut a new version of his famous hybrid live sets, wrote that his team made the decision “due to scheduling complications” in a statement shared today. “I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but I promise to make it worth the wait,” he wrote. “When I return, I’ll bring my full live show experience, and it’s going to be epic!”

Is the switch a net gain or loss for fans? It depends on whom you ask. Cox commands a huge draw for slightly more passive music lovers, which is not to say that his hybrid live sets avoid more experimental terrain. For lovers of “serious techno” who descend upon Hart Plaza to get their fix straight from the source, though, Mills is an unquestionable upgrade.

Billing one more Detroit artist also falls in line with Movement’s mission of platforming local talent alongside globetrotting headliners. Mills last performed at the festival in 2022, closing out the mainstage on the final day of its long-awaited return in the wake of the COVID pandemic.

“To be able to play in Detroit is and has always been a special kind of magic,” reads a statement from Mills. “It’s one of the few places in the world where anything could happen because of a higher premium of music ‘sense’ most people have. And it’s constantly being handed down from one generation to the next. Detroit is the place that understands the power of music and the value of a soulful and moving experience.”

Both single and three-day passes are now on sale, currently priced at $139 and $319, respectively. Purchase yours and find additional information on the Movement Detroit website.
