Fundraiser Launched to Cover Deman Rockers of Ragga Twins’ Spinal Injury Costs

Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation has billed Fabio & Grooverider, General Levy, and others for a fundraiser event to help cover Deman Rockers’ medical costs.

Last month, Deman Rockers (real name David Destouche) of celebrated jungle duo Ragga Twins suffered a spinal injury after falling outside of his home. A fundraiser event on Saturday, December 21 at Brixton Jamm in London has been announced to help recoup some of the expenses stemming from the incident.

A Dance for Deman Rockers, as the night is billed, has been organized by the Last Night A DJ Saved My Life Foundation, and an impressive number of artists are slated to perform. Among them are jungle mainstays such as Fabio & Grooverider, General Levy, Jumpin Jack Frost, and Nicky Blackmarket.

A Just Giving page dedicated to the event notes that “the response from [Destouche’s] peers and friends has been incredible,” with “many more having agreed to perform to help raise funds.” Proceeds from the event will help Destouche stay afloat while he pauses touring on his road to recovery, and donations can also be made via the Just Giving page.

According to the description, the fall itself drew his doctors’ attention to a “longstanding condition affecting the artist’s spine” that required an immediate operation. Destouche has recently experienced mobility issues, and the operation left him bedbound and unable to perform.

Destouche has been an emcee since the ’80s, originally making a name for himself alongside his brother, Trevor (known professionally as Flinty Badman) as part of London soundsystem Unity. The two gained early traction thanks to singles like “Spliffhead” and “Hooligan 69” before releasing their 1991 debut album, Reggae Owes Me Money.

“While the Ragga Twins have remained busy for decades, their focus has always been on delivering in the dance rather than putting away funds for a rainy day,” reads the description. “We are hoping that those who have enjoyed their work since the 1980s will be keen to put something back and help out with donations.”

Tickets to A Dance for Deman Rockers can be purchased via Resident Advisor.
