Massive Attack cited “unforeseen circumstances” as their reason for canceling five tour dates on the US East Coast.
Fans of Massive Attack throughout cities along the US East Coast were met with disappointment over the weekend as the duo called off five tour dates in the region.
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, Massive Attack must regrettably cancel their upcoming performance at III Points Festival in Miami on October 19th, as well as their shows in Atlanta GA, Washington, DC, Boston MA, and Forest Hills NY,” reads a statement shared to the outfit’s Instagram Story. “We appreciate your understanding at the time.”
The most notable cancellation of the lot was their headline set at III Points. Massive Attack were among the most prominent headliners; the lineup also includes artists like Sara Landry, Sammy Virji, and Justice.
Massive Attack formed in 1988, a union between former Wild Bunch DJ collective members Andrew “Mushroom” Vowles and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall and graffiti artist Robert “3D” Del Naja. ’90s albums like Blue Lines, Protection, and the ever-pervasive Mezzanine cemented their legacy as one of the acts most closely associated with the trip-hop genre.
Massive Attack — whose current lineup consists of Del Naja, Marshall, and former Wild Bunch emcee Tricky — have also aligned their brand with a number of social initiatives. In the lead-up to the gigs they canceled, for instance, they played their first UK event in five years on August 25 in Bristol, one advertised as “the lowest carbon show of its size ever staged.” The group’s longstanding advocacy in favor of the people of Palestine has also grown especially polarizing since last year’s flashpoint in the country’s conflict with Israel.
Massive Attack’s next scheduled performance is at M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool on November 29.
