Desire: The Carl Craig Story will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on June 12.

Second-wave Detroit techno artist Carl Craig is among the small handful of artists most closely associated with the globally influential genre. A new documentary titled Desire: The Carl Craig Story that explores his life and career premieres on June 12 at the Tribeca Film Festival with screenings for the press and public on June 13 and 15.

According to a press release, Desire chronicles into Craig’s middle-class upbringing, how he broke from the family tradition of pursuing higher education, and the acclaim his music has earned in arts communities outside of techno. Apparently, though, it’s not all sunshine and roses. Without giving too much away, the press release mentions that the film also delves into “challenges that could ultimately force him to stay away from the dance floor.”

Jean-Cosme Delaloye produced Desire. He has previously worked on films such as The Pawn (2015), Stray Bullet (2018), and Harley (2020).

Born in 1969, Carl Craig grew interested in dance music after hearing first-wave Detroit techno figurehead Derrick May‘s WJLB radio show. His discography extends all the way back to 1989, with key releases including his debut studio-length album Landcruising (1995) on Blanco y Negro Records and More Songs About Food and Revolutionary Art (1997) on his own Planet E.

In recent years, Craig has also become one of the most sought-after bookings in Detroit techno. His Detroit Love event brand, which he introduced at Amsterdam Dance Event 2014, takes him and his contemporaries to virtually every corner of the globe.

Tribeca Film Festival has taken place annually in Manhattan, New York‘s Tribeca neighborhood since 2002. This year’s edition runs from Wednesday, June 5th to Sunday, June 16. The feature lineup includes films starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Cera, and Lily Gladstone.
