deadmau5′ Pet Cat Meowingtons is Crossing the Rainbow Bridge

Professor Meowingtons, PhD was a lovable companion to deadmau5 for 16 years.

World-famous DJ and producer deadmau5 has kept relatively quiet on social media for the past few years, limiting his activity on most public-facing channels to official tour and release announcements. In something of a departure, he’s shared the heart-wrenching news that he must put his beloved pet cat Professor Meowingtons to sleep.

“Yes Meowingtons is just a f***** cat, but I’ll say just to me, he’s one of my best friends,” wrote deadmau5 (real name Joel Zimmerman) in an Instagram post. “I don’t say that casually. 16 years. He was my peace and quiet from the beginning of this f****** bats*** crazy rollercoaster career… The entire ride.”

Zimmerman went on to say that due to Meowingtons’ medical issues, “tomorrow I have to help him cross the rainbow bridge. My heart is broken.”

16 years puts Meowingtons’ adoption from the Toronto Humane Society at the beginning of Zimmerman’s career breakthrough, close to the release of his 2008 effort, Random Album Title. The album included his commercially succesful Kaskade collaboration, “I Remember,” as well as singles like “Faxing Berlin” and “Not Exactly.”

Meowingtons would feature heavily in deadmau5 branding in the years to follow. Zimmerman’s 2011 Meowingtons Hax Tour was named after the black-and-white feline, and he appeared on the cover of Zimmerman’s 2012 album > Album Title Goes Here <. In 2021, Zimmerman even made an OnlyFans account for his beloved pet. With nearly 30,000 followers on Instagram and 80,000 on Facebook as of this writing, his cat commanded a larger following than most dance music artists.

“It’s a really personal issue, and I normally keep things to myself and can kinda’ work through it on my own,” wrote Zimmerman. “But Professor Meowingtons, PhD is so special to all of us, I felt like I should let you all know because he’s touched so many lives in stupid ways.”

We here at EDM Identity express our sincere condolences and are keeping deadmau5 and Professor Meowingtons, PhD in our thoughts.
